Setup and Performance
Unlike the Atom DAC+/Amp+ stack, there is no need to consider having the DAC above the amplifier here. The beefier construction means there is no way the cables on the back or front will tip things over, so go ahead and place the TOPPING L50 over the E50 as seen above. This creates more room for heat dissipation from the amplifier, which is obviously the more power-hungry of the two. I will also say that the inner heatsinks and aluminium chassis make for a setup without any heat-related issued even over longer sessions. Based on the feature set, I would certainly go with a set of 1/4″ TRS interconnects, such as TOPPING’s own TCT1 set bundled with the E50 and L50 if bought together. I did not have those or any 1/4″ TRS cables on hand, so I went with the same RCA interconnects as in the JDS Labs Atom stack review. TOPPING sells RCA interconnects as well, and those are more likely to be bundled with the E50 and L50 combo. This makes for single-ended input from the TOPPING E50 to the L50, and the two stack up nicely as seen above.
Next comes connecting the two USB cables from the E50, as well as the AC power adapter feeding the L50. These three cables are the bare minimum for using the E50 and L50 stack with a desktop to drive headphones, and you may want to consider having the pass-through options to use the stack as a preamp to powered desktop speakers, or even the coax or optical input of the E50. The three used above can be cable-managed well enough courtesy the thin cables, and turning the stack on now also shows the display of the E50 in its orange glory. I have no idea why TOPPING went with orange as it clashes with all the color options for the E50/L50 stack and can be cumbersome at night or in low-lit environments. Regardless, this is where you find out how little the E50 can do with that single button next to the display—it only cycles through the various inputs. The display turns itself off after a minute of inactivity, so that’s something at least. Note that the -30 dB display corresponds to the volume control setting by default, which makes for a relatively quiet setup if the L50 is also in low gain (-14 dB) mode. So don’t be surprised if things are not audible to begin with as that’s where the two volume controls on the E50 and L50 in addition to the three gain modes on the L50 come in.
There is no need to install drivers for use with Windows 10 or 11. The TOPPING E50 is recognized automatically and set up as a speaker output by default with nothing connected to the headphone jack. This allows for up to 32-bit 384 kHz PCM playback in Windows, which the display of the E50 shows. Of course, this is assuming your PC is a compatible UAC2 device. It’s when used with consoles in particular that you need to rely on UAC1, and you may need a fallback UAC1 cable for that. If you use the coax or optical input, playback is limited to «only» 24-bit/192 kHz, with the respective mode shown on the display, and the playback setting seen for a second before defaulting back to the volume setting.
Earlier Windows versions, including Win 7, which I know some are still on, do not have native XMOS decoding support, which would have you download the XMOS drivers, whose installer is found here. These drivers also enable WASAPI exclusive mode as an option in the player of your choice instead of just ASIO, which holds true in Windows 10/11 as well. Other options are now available too, including buffer size for the E50 over ASIO.
As seen above, JRiver had no issues detecting both WASAPI and ASIO options, and TOPPING even has a guide on configuring the E50 for best playback with the likes of Foobar and JRiver. You can always check the driver status as it pertains to the controlled hardware to ensure it is indeed the TOPPING E50 being configured. As seen above, the XMOS drivers allow for 16 and 24-bit playback. My default setup was 32-bit audio over JRiver, with volume in Windows 10 set to ~95%, and I then set the sampling rate to an integer multiple of the source-file quality, as random issues may arise if it deviates from this integral multiplier. Many companies suggest as much; for example, use 192 kHz playback with 48/96/192 kHz audio files. Of course, the TOPPING E50 brings with it DSD playback too, in addition to MQA rendering, which may or may not interest you with all the ongoing drama. If it does, note that full rendering and MQA unfolding is only available with USB input, and it will once again be displayed.
Here is an example setup with the HarmonicDyne Poseidon (review coming sooner than later) connected to the TOPPING L50 using the stock XLR cable. Using RCA interconnects, the L50 was connected to the E50, which was in turn connected to my PC via the USB cable. As such, I set the first switch on the L50 to SE for the single-ended input, and then set the gain switch to medium. At this point, turning the volume knob to about 3 o’clock was sufficient for a quick test, but the operating conditions weren’t necessarily the best because the E50 was still set to -30 dB in its output. This is where the remote control came in handy, as I quickly changed the volume of the entire stack on the E50 itself. It’s the easiest way forward for when you, say, have the stack placed somewhere near the back of your desk. The remote control also allows for quickly changing inputs and outputs from the E50, as well as adjusting the brightness of the display, among other things. This is also the best way to control speaker volume when using the stack as a preamp. I certainly urge users to use the remote.
Given this is predominantly a headphone stack, what matters the most is how clean the signal output is and how much power is provided to drive headphones. The most useful metric in this regard is the immense 3.5 W per channel maximum continuous power rating at 16 Ω with a THD+N below 0.1%, which is far too much power for just about any set of headphones or IEMs with 16 Ω impedance. Indeed, IEMs tend to more often fall into this range, and are far more sensitive than headphones, so you would absolutely need to start at low gain and volume on the E50/L50 set to the minimum before slowly increasing things lest you blow up the IEM drivers and potentially damage your ears. That said, I certainly would not get this stack purely for IEMs, including some of the more demanding planar driver IEMs. But if you do occasionally want to use these with IEMs, the low output impedance of under 0.1 Ω and clean power come in handy, as I did not have any hiss with most of the IEMs I have here; exceptions were the Campfire Audio ones that seem to hiss with just about anything in standby anyway.
As expected, output power goes down as impedance increases. However, with 2.8 W at 32 Ω, 2 W at 64 Ω, 0.54 W at 300 Ω, and 0.29 W at 600 Ω, numbers are still high. You can find a very handy power calculator for headphones here, which confirms that the E50/L50 stack can drive just about any headphone well enough. Current output is also sufficient to meet the needs of those who profess high current amplification for the likes of planar driver headphones, and I am inclined to test this combo with the most demanding headphones (think HIFIMAN Susvara or HE6 series) as and when I get the chance. TOPPING of course has higher power output amplifiers in its A-series, with the A30 Pro able to put out 6 W per channel in single-ended operation and the flagship A90 capable of a massive 7.6 W in balanced mode. Keep in mind that both the 1/4″ and XLR outputs are single-ended, so feel free to use either based on your cable type. I should also point out that the E50 and L50 circuitry were designed together, and for those wanting an integrated amplifier to drive passive speakers, the newly released PA5 power amplifier is intended to be used with the E50.
As with most such linear amplifiers, the TOPPING E50/L50 stack is acoustically transparent. This means the sound signature of your headphones, IEMs, and speakers will not be changed when driven through the stack. It was the same with the two previous JDS Labs reviews, as well as most portable sources I have tested to date. There is no felt harmonic disorder, be it second or third-order harmonics where the likes of tube amplifiers make their presence felt. As such, don’t expect this stack to add any coloring to the tonality of headphones, which to many is music to the ears as this stack can drive more demanding headphones without changing the frequency response or tonality, and technicalities come off untouched as well. This is why I am not even showing a frequency response measurement this time around, noting that everything measured identically to my reference sound card, as well as the JDS Labs Element II from before.
There were obvious improvements in comparison to my laptop’s own Realtek ALC3266 chipset throughout the frequency range of all tested headphones and earphones, and this is before the speaker option with the preamp comes in. The E50/L50 stack cleans up the sound output and provides for a fantastic listening experience. Note that I also tested this with some motherboards, but could not easily get my PC near the noise-dampened chamber where testing is done. With some higher-end motherboards that boast great onboard audio, I was not able to discern a difference between the integrated audio circuit and TOPPING E50 on most files, but orchestral music recorded in FLAC still showed an improvement up to 192 kHz PCM playback. My Tidal subscription had just run out, and I have no plans to renew it for MQA testing while trialing Qobuz for my streaming needs instead. Using the E50 in ASIO mode with JRiver and DSD playback also worked smoothly as shown before, so you may want to install those drivers if you are also interested. I also acknowledge that testing a DAC or amplifier requires an oscilloscope at the very least, and takes a much more expensive audio analyzer, but I do not have access to one at this time.

По начинке ЦАП строится на конвертере ESS ES9068AS, с 32- битным USB чипом XMOS XU216, а это означает просто запредельное качество для PCM и DSD и полное декодирование MQA потока. Ну а в качестве бонуса, здесь просто фантастического уровня дисплей, куча интересных настроек и выходы как на классической RCA-паре, так и балансных TRS, как у профессиональных аудиоинтерфейсов. В общем, аппарат просто огонь, его сегодня подробно и рассмотрим.

Упаковка и комплектация
Пришел ЦАП в классической уже картонной коробке с логотипом пройденной Hi-Res Audio сертификации и адресом официального сайта компании.
В комплект нам положили инструкцию, гарантийный талон, пульт дистанционного управления и два метровых USB кабеля для питания и подключения к компьютеру.
Пульт тактильно приятный, сделан из матового пластика с прорезиненными кнопками. Из функционала на него вынесли отключение звука «mute», управление громкостью, переключение активного входа и выхода, встроенных в конвертер фильтров, автоотключние и изменение яркости дисплея. Как видите, только самое необходимое.
Дизайн/Эргономика
Корпус у ЦАПа полностью металлический с наклейками о поддержке MQA и Hi-Res Audio сертификации. Снизу же находятся 4 резиновых ножки.
Из входов имеем USB, оптику и коаксиал, а на выход идет RCA-пара и два балансных TRS разъема. Ровно такие, как используются у современных аудиоинтерфейсов.
Передняя же часть полностью отдана под большой информативный дисплей и одну сенсорную многофункциональную кнопку. Одно касание которой переключает входы, а двойное — выходы. Так же здесь есть возможность играть как в одно направление, так на оба выхода сразу, если в этом, конечно, есть смысл.
Для редактирования всего списка настроек необходимо в режиме ожидания (когда горит только красная точка) на 3 секунды зажать сенсорную кнопку. Там под литерой «F» скрывается набор фильтров, «L» — отвечает за подсветку, «A» — автоотключение, «O» — выходы, а «m» включает и отключает фиксированную громкость для работы в качестве предусилителя. Для принятия изменений еще раз зажимаем кнопку до появления «8-8».
На главном экране отображается тип воспроизводимого потока, активный вход, уровень громкости и битрейт. При работе аппарат абсолютно не греется, места на столе не занимает, да и выглядит весьма достойно.
Разбирать Topping E50 не вижу ни одной причины. Базируется аппарат на самом свежем и очень крутом чипе ESS ES9068AS с полным декодированием MQA потока, за USB отвечает тоже последняя реализация XMOS XU216, а в качестве операционных усилителей используются благородные TI OPA1612.
Питается ЦАП от любого USB порта, что открывает абсолютно новые перспективы для его использования. Например, с повербанком, где мы полностью избавляемся от артефактов сети. Не очень удобно, что нет механического регулятора уровня сигнала, да и сенсорная кнопка штука хотя и привычная, но для аудиосегмента скорее компромиссная. Ничто не заменит старую добрую механику.
Алгоритм работы с девайсом очевиден. Лично я подключаю его по USB к своему ноутбуку, а на выход подсоединяю стационарный усилитель для наушников L50. И уже к нему идут мои активные мониторы Yamaha и, собственно, наушники. О усилителе подробнее мы поговорим в следующий раз, сегодня же сконцентрируемся на ЦАПе. Включается он автоматически при обнаружении сигнала. Если же его долгое время нет, то ЦАП автоматом уходит в сон. Такое я, честно говоря, вижу впервые. Для пробуждения необходимо нажать на кнопку включения с пульта или пару раз тапнуть на сенсор. И все, начинаем получать удовольствие от прослушивания любимой музыки.
Программное обеспечение
Под Windows 10 аппарат определяется автоматически, способный к работе посредством WASAPI драйверов. Однако я настоятельно рекомендую скачать и установить о официального сайта драйверы XMOS, которые производитель всегда держит в самом актуально состоянии.
Сейчас это уже версия 5.27.0, хотя неделю назад еще была 5.20.0. Не знаю больше ни одного производителя, который бы данным вопросом настолько заморачивался. Кроме того, драйверы позволяют использовать старые версии Windows, открывают настройки задержки и предоставляют к устройству полноценный ASIO интерфейс. А это дорогого стоит.
Из удивительного на официальном сайте я нашел обновление прошивки для героя нашего обзора, после которой желательно сделать сброс на заводские настройки. Происходит это в режиме ожидания с пульта управления: последовательно нажимаем кнопки «громкость вниз», «громкость вверх» и «отключение звука».
В панели же Wndows нам доступно разрешение до 32 бит 384 кГц.
Со смартфоном аппарат тоже прекрасно работает, причем во всех приложениях, играх и стримминговых сервисах. В том числе и через специализированный BitPerfect режим.
Измерения
Все замеры тут, естественно, имеют оценку «отлично».
Ровненькая кривая АЧХ, какой-то запредельный уровень шума, прекрасный динамический диапазон и искажения ниже уровня минус 110 Дб.
Причем как гармонические, так и интермодуляционные.
Небольшой разбаланс каналов относится к усилителю или к моими межблочным кабелям.
По питанию работа от повербанка реально убирает все лишние гармоники. Можете увидеть это самостоятельно на графиках. В общем, железо и измерения у аппарат просто ТОП.
Все измерения производились на аудиоинтерфейсе MOTU M4.
Звук
По подаче Topping E50 показывает максимально возможную техничность с просто великолепной отработкой атак и затуханий, отличной передачей эмоций и очень подробной прорисовкой всего музыкального полотна. Слушается это до вау-эффекта, если конечно остальной ваш тракт позволяет в достаточной мере раскрыть потенциал ЦАПа. А в связке же с усилителем для наушников L50 — это вообще нечто. Герой обзора легко и очень качественно отыграет любые скоростные тяжелые жанры, оркестр или даже сложный мультиинструментальный джаз. В этом плане вообще никаких преград для E50 я не вижу. Из одноклассников сравнивал E50 с SMS SU-8s на одном и том же усилителе L50. Лично мне чуть больше понравился вариант от SMSL и я даже поясню почему. Дело в том, что SU-8s просто потрясающе, на мой взгляд, умеет передать сцену в глубину, да так, что каждый инструмент буквально ощущаешь в отдалении друг от друга и при этом все они объемные и практически живые. Для оркестровой музыки это очень подкупает, в тяжелой же или, например, ритмичной электронике — скорее лишнее.
Topping шикарно строит передний план и достаточно четко прорисовывает все остальное, но так сильно в глубину не уходит. Зато у него звук резкий и прозрачный, а SMSL имеет легкое такое смягчение пиков. То есть тут больше вкусовые различия, чем в уровне. Кто любит тяж, хорошо компрессированную электронику или другие не сильно перегруженные инструментами стили — без сомнения выберут Topping E50. Он буквально создан для этих направлений. А для академической музыки, оркестра и других мультиинструментальных команд предпочтительнее оказывается SMSL. Но это вовсе не значит, что Topping хуже или лучше SMSL. Просто у них немного разная подача. Мне посчастливилось сравнить их напрямую, но даже в этом случае я затрудняюсь однозначно сказать, что бы выбрал сейчас. У Topping кристально чистое звучание с уходом от саб вибраций до самых высоких частот. Причем прорисовано все одинаково круто. SMSL мягче, музыкальнее и пытается больше показывать пространство сцены в глубину.
Если же все таки разобрать звучание ЦАПа по частотам, то тут превосходный по глубине и прорисовке бас, отличная передача нижней середины (это где находится ритм составляющая) и просто идеально чистый и при этом естественно звучащий вокал и разнообразные лидирующие инструменты. Высокие же, если ваша акустика позволяет, имеют ровно такую же массу, что и середина и длятся до самых своих пределов, да так, что затухания струн буквально завораживают. Из наушников в тестировании участвовали очень техничные Moondrop KATO и универсальные модели Yanyin Canon с Kinera Skuld. Возможностей которых для раскрытия данного ЦАПа было, на мой взгляд, с головой. Очень круто звучит аппарат, мне даже особо сравнить его звук не с чем. Burson PlayMate 2 очень шумит в фоне и гораздо сильнее красит звучание. Хотя да, они примерно на одном уровне.
В сухом остатке, у нас практически зеркально чистое звучание с хорошей проработкой тембров, мелодичностью и отличной передачей эмоциональной составляющей. Все очень четко, детально и технично. Если вы ищите что-то с максимально натуральной подачей, способное подробно передать звучание даже на критически высокой скорости и при этом сохранить целостность каждого из тембров, точно прорисовать их взаимодействие и созвучие, то это однозначно к Topping E50. Я переслушал множество ЦАПов из разных ценовых категорий и E50 — один из тех, что я бы хотел оставить себе. Для тяжа, рока, электроники, блюза, всяких этнических вещей и произведений старой школы — он просто шикарен. Если деньги позволяют, то рекомендую брать именно его, а не младшие версии от этого же производителя. Оно реально того стоит.

Подводя итоги, стационарный ЦАП Topping E50 прежде всего выглядит просто фантастически, имеет специально созданный для него усилитель для наушников, удобный пульт в комплекте, очень богатое меню и возможность использовать его, запитав от повербанка. Например, для минимизации шумов и искажений или работы вдалеке от розетки. Минусов ему даже придумать не могу. Чтобы хоть что-то сказать, тут нет блютуз и балансные выходы не на аудиофилских XLR, а на профессиональных TRS коннекторах. А так, все очень даже здорово: аппарат умеет сам уходить в сон, да и замеры у него просто фантастические. По начинке имеем самое актуальное железо с поддержкой PCM до 32 бит 768 кГц, DSD512 и полное декодирование MQA.
Да и звучит аппарат, как говорится, на все деньги. Чисто, глубоко, драйвово и при этом очень насыщенно, мелодично и эмоционально. Для скоростных жанров — то что доктор прописал. Это реально аппарат, который купил и закрыл вопрос со звуком на долгие годы. Однозначно могу рекомендовать к приобретению. Мне данный девайс понравился просто безумно.

купил себе на али данный цап на замену topping d3 звучит на мой слух значительно лучше
покупал тут с купоном продавца и монетами али обошёлся в 245$ есть вопросы спрашивайте, далее мой комент к видосу на ютубе к этому цапу относительно впечатлений по звучанию
пришла ко мне посылка с цапом наконец, послушал я его, сказать что поражён звуком , это всё равно что ничего не сказать, по с равнению с цапом 6ти летней давности, этот звучит просто изумительно, а я напомню у меня до этого тоже был цапоусь topping D3, я не скажу что у него не хватало каких то частот, в принципе для не искушённого слушателя вроде меня, он играет (играл) очень хорошо детально со всеми нюансами, но когда я включил послушать е50 я просто час молчал от охреневания как может звучать музыка, могу примерно обрисовать как я вижу в сравнении эти два цапа от одного и того же производителя между прочим, так вот d3 звучит как если смотреть своё отражение в озере с рябью на воде от ветра, е50 же на его фоне звучит как если бы смотреться в зеркало из стекла без какой либо ряби и замутнённости, при этом по частотам вроде как всё тоже самое, но у е50 гораздо лучше разделение стерео панорамы и значительно шире, каждый звук который по задумке звукаря должен был как бы обратить на себя внимание стал больше очерчен и это касается не только скажем каких то определённых частот или инструментов, музыка заставляет обратить на себя внимание в разном частотном диапазоне, будь то бас, сибилянты либо голос, звук хлёсткий там где надо и спокойный там где не должно повышаться внимания, очень понравился бас, если он раньше был инертный, то есть бочка стукнула и после скажем внимание должно переключиться на другой акцент в композиции, а ты в итоге слышишь ещё доигрывающую бочку какое то время, то на е50 бочка стукнула и закончила гораздо раньше, при этом количество баса звучащего в грудной клетке не стало меньше также чувствуется удар, но он не мешает остальным акцентам которые ты в итоге лучше слышишь из за того что их не перебивает не нужное послезвучие, вот почему я сделал аналогию с отражением и волнами, и так не только на басах, послушал разного рода метал, многие обращали наверное внимание например у Раммштайна да и других, например звучат барабаны а точнее тарелки которые из них играют на самых высоких и порой эти самые тарелки превращаются в какую то кашу тут для примера послушайте раммов Ich tu dir weh с 0: 35 в песне начинается мощная атака с барабанами в том числе и тарелки сливаются в одно не понятное шумящее говнище, так вот на е50 дело обстоит многократно лучше чем на д3, на д3 в этом самом месте тарелки пилят мозг ужасно из за своей кучеобразной формы, е50 уменьшает пилящий акцент, и делает более внятным эти звуки, заметил что гораздо меньше устаёшь от прослушивания метала больше хочется по мотать башкой в такт это пока всё что пришло на ум чтоб описать ощущение от прослушки, проверил разные форматы, от dsd до mqa, честно говоря не особо важны лично для меня так как в основном вся дискография во флаке, но то что они действительно работают, приятно, есть и хрен с ними, 44/16 наше всё, далее мне остался не ясен один момент, у меня вин7 дрова вроде все поставил, но в настройках нигде не увидел дискретизацию выше 384кГц возможно надо поставить винду 10 и дрова там вроде посвежей версия от производителя, а так для меня не принципиально, но лучше да чем нет, хотя музыки в таком разрешении у меня нет

This is a review and detailed measurements of the new Topping E50 balanced USB DAC. It was sent to me by the company and costs US $269. I just reviewed its companion headphone amplifier, the Topping L50.
The E50 takes my favorite orange LED display and makes it even nicer!
It is a gorgeous bright orange display. A single button turns the unit on and cycles through the inputs. You also get a remote control:
As you see, power is provided through a 5 volt barrel connector. Topping provides a USB to barrel cable adapter so you can use any USB power supply.
As with more recent Topping products, it uses TRS output for balanced output instead of XLR which takes up a lot more space.
Topping E50 Measurements
As usual we start without dashboard. Let’s test the balanced output with USB input:
Another exemplary performance from Topping, landing it almost at top of all DACs ever tested:
RCA output is nearly as good:
Noise performance is excellent as well:
Linearity is as perfect as you can get:
IMD performance is excellent:
I see a hint of ESS dac chip IMD hump. I wonder if that is what powers it.
Multitone performance is superb with almost no frequency dependency:
Jitter over USB is perfect:
It degrades just a hair over Toslink/Coax:

Conclusions
What can I say but another star performance from Topping. Company is so focused on squeezing every bit of noise and distortion out of these products while providing them to us at bargain prices. And in this case, great looks as well. I wish I could complain about something but nothing comes to mind.

Great job, @JohnYang1997 and excellent review, @amirm as always. I think the Topping E50 + L50 Combo is going to be the perfect companion for a Raspberry Pi 4 with Display running RoPieeeXL (Roon Bridge) to set it up as Desk Roon end point. Literally a full streamer for less than $700. What a bargain!!!

I cant keep up. Still have my original dx7, but why so many variations of dacs, headphone amps? How many does Topping now make and how do you differentiate between the products?
Or are these just upgrades of existing product lines?

I’d be interested to know what receiver is being used for the Spidf inputs, coax & optical.
Is it the same one used on the new E30 model or a different version to ensure the «drop out» issue has been resolved.

Same SINAD at both 2V and 4V which is crazy at 120dB for BOTH. But alas, the 50mV spec is missing. (I wonder, could we get SINAD and not just SNR for 50mV?) I know you don’t do it for DACs, but still :\
Alas, I just have to say it.. I HATE not having XLR for balanced duty (both input and output), I really like how solid and instant a connection is with XLR. I can somewhat understand for portable devices that use 4.4 or 2.5mm (though 2.5mm creator should be flogged, it’s far too fragile at that size).
Also like the new LED screen, using more sectioned LED’s, just looks better plainly put. Though dread the plexi front as always.

Damn, it missed my «I wonder how much Topping will release this for?» by $20! [I was hoping it would be half the price of the Gustard X16 given the different feature set and the price of the E30]. Thank you Topping for providing such a great range of DACs with different feature sets at different price points.

It will have same compatibility as D90se. Better than cs8416.

I’ve never been a Topping person after receiving a D50 DOA and hearing about others having issues with failing components but dang that’s kind of sexy.

You can already listen to 24 bit music for decades. You don’t need true 24 bit resolution for that. You can’t hear -120 dB signals in music anyway (if it could be recorded in real life situations anyway).
It’s not like you could ever hear the difference between -120dB and -140dB distortion and noise anyway.
The improvements are only technical improvements by chip manufacturers and designers making improvements on the borders of what’s technically possible.

Too many DACs are being released IMO, makes me want to switch to vinyl so I don’t have the temptation to buy each new one.

So what’s the logic behind D and E designations in model names? I thought D was for reserved DACs and Dx for DAC/amp combos.

Ceterum censeo: For the consumer, this whole Hires BS is plain marketing. Any differences are due to different mixing/mastering.
On the producer side, it gives more headroom, but last time I had a chance to check, 24/96 was «tops» there, and it wasn’t long ago.
