Getting locked out of your luggage is something that happens to even the most seasoned travellers at some time or another. Luckily the ubiquitous, TSA approved, 3-digit combination locks used by brands such as Samsonite, Eastpack, Antler and American Tourister are easy to open without damaging either the lock or the case and without any special tools.
By following the steps described below, you will be able to quickly open the lock and re-program the code to a new 3 digit combination which is easier to remember.

How to Unlock Your Suitcase When You Forgot the Combination
If you look closely at the lock from above, you will see that to one side of the 3 numbered thumb-wheels there is a small disk (see photos below).
I have found that the best way to see the disks is by using your mobile phone’s camera.
Select the video camera and shine the flash down into the lock then zoom-in to see the disks more clearly.
Starting with the first thumb-wheel of the lock, turn the wheel one click at a time until you see a notch in the disk as shown in the photos.
Once you have lined up the notch of the first wheel you then repeat the process for the second and third digit until the notches of all three wheels are lined up (see the photo of the blue suitcase).
Once all three notches are lined up, turn the suitcase so you can see the numbers.
Note, this is NOT the combination code.

Write down the numbers on the first line of a blank sheet of paper.
On the next line add 1 to each digit.
Repeat this 8 more times until you have a list of 10 3-digit numbers as shown in the photo below.
Try the codes one at a time until you find the one which opens the suitcase.
Once the case is open you can change the combination for one which is easier to remember.
With practice, the entire procedure takes less than 2 minutes.

When writing this article I used 2 different suitcases, both of which are fitted with TSA approved Travel Sentry combination locks. The locks are slightly different models but the procedure is identical.
I made the video using the older, blue, suitcase because the notches in the green plastic discs are easier to see than the notches in the black disks of the red suitcase.
The code which opened the red suitcase was 2 clicks away from the position with the disks lined up. The code which opened the blue case was 8 clicks away.
If none of the codes which you have written down work you should check that you lined the notches up correctly. As can be seen in the video, there are normally two positions where the notches are visible. Make sure that all 3 notches are lined up in the same position. You can see that in the video I lined up the disks at the right-hand position.

How do Combination Locks Work?

The 3-digit combination locks used on suitcases are designed so that you can change the combination to a unique code which only you know.
To do this, you have to first set the lock to the current combination. You then press a small button (normally using a ballpoint pen) which frees the numbered thumb-wheels from the locking mechanism (currently in the open position).
You can then turn the 3 numbered thumb wheels independently to a new combination before pushing the larger button (the one which is used to open the lock). This re-connects the numbered thumb-wheels to the locking mechanism, activating the new code.
The method described above relies on the fact that part of the locking mechanism itself is visible (the notched disks next to the thumb-wheels). This makes the number shown on the knurled thumb-wheel pretty much irrelevant. Once the disks are aligned you simply need to rotate them around until the lock opens.

What Are TSA Approved Locks?

The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) is a US federal government agency responsible for the security of travellers that was created in response to the September 11 attacks.
All luggage is scanned before being loaded into aeroplanes and if any prohibited items are detected it will be opened by airport staff and the items removed.
TSA approved locks, identified by the red diamond shaped Travel Sentry logo, can be opened using master keys. The locks are often incorporated into suitcases but TSA approved padlocks are also available.
If your suitcase can’t be opened with a master key then, if they need inspect your luggage, airport staff will open it by force, cutting off padlocks etc.
To save confusion it’s a good idea to note down the numbers
In theory the keys are only available to airport staff but in reality anyone with a 3D printer can print out their own master keys.
Is it Really worth Locking my TSA approved Luggage Lock?
As we have seen, the 3-digit combination locks fitted to most modern suitcases offer very little or no security. At best they stop your suitcase from opening accidentally during transit, preventing your dirty laundry from spilling out on the baggage carousel.
Some suitcases (including the red suitcase in the photos) have small metal hoops incorporated into the zip-pullers allowing you to use a padlock to lock your suitcase. Although at first glance this may seem to add a second level of security, in reality, it’s a waste of time. As shown in this video, zip closure suitcases can be opened quickly and easily using a ballpoint pen.

1. HOW DO I OPEN MY SUITCASES?

So you have just purchased your suitcase and have arrived home, but it is impossible to open? Don’t worry, it’s not locked, all you have to do is push a small button near the lock. If you can see an arrow like in this photo, push the button in the direction of the arrow. You will then be able to open your suitcase with ease.

In the case of double locks, look at the direction of the arrows on the button. If you push it in one direction, it will open one side of the case. Pushing in the other direction will then open the second lock.

On cases within the BELFORT PLUS collection, open the lock by simply pressing the button and then tilting the lock clasp. Do this at all 3 opening points.

1. Open the lock by simply pressing button A.
2. Put the bag face down on the floor.
3. Swivel the catch of the lock upwards and pinch it between the bottom and top openings.
4. Swivel the red lever 90° into a vertical position, keep it there with your finger.
5. View your combination (your secret code to reopen your bag).
6. Put the red lever back to its original position, your personal combination is set.

Your code is now registered. Write it down in a safe place so that you can go back to it if you forget it. If you want to change the combination, repeat steps 2-6.

1. Rotate the catch on the case to open it.
2. Inside the case, behind the lock, move the cover to show the little lever. This level is initially placed in position A, move it into position B as shown in the illustration below.
3. Enter your secret code (for example 8-8-8) by turning the wheels.
4. Put the lever back into position A. Put the cover back correctly.

Your code is now registered. Write it down in a safe place so that you can go back to it if you forget it. If you want to change the combination, repeat steps 2-4.

5. WHAT IS A TSA COMBINATION LOCK WITH A KEYHOLE AS WELL AS A CODE NUMBER?

The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) combination lock allows you to lock your bag with a code while allowing the American customs authorities responsible for transport security to check it when it arrives on American soil without damaging it.

So the keyhole on the TSA combination lock is for the sole use of the American authorities. The advantage of this lock is the customs officers access and so avoid them damaging your bag.

To know if your bag has a TSA lock, look at the lock itself — the TSA lock has a little, red, lozenge shaped logo, like the one below.

Испортить долгожданный отдых может любая мелочь. Например, как открыть чемодан, если забыл код из 3 цифр? Ломать замок, резать молнию или ткань обшивки? Не стоит сразу портить вещь, ведь есть несколько щадящих способов вскрытия. Практически каждый бренд оставляет лазейку для забывчивых покупателей, главное, знать несколько маленьких хитростей.

Виды кодовых замков

Кодовые замки для чемоданов бывают двух видов:

• навесные;
• встроенные.

Навесные обычно устанавливают на бюджетные модели сумок, так как от такой защелки довольно просто избавиться. Хотя для тех, кто забыл пароль и не знает, как открыть чемодан — это даже плюс. Минус в том, что и воришкам будет так же просто вскрыть замочек.

Встроенные кодовые замки ставят на более дорогие чемоданы. Такие запоры более надежны, но и открыть их будет сложнее.

Как открыть?

Для навесного замка самый простой способ открыть кодовый чемодан, если забыл код — просто срезать замочек и купить вместо него новый. На маркетплейсах представлен огромный ассортимент подобных защелок, цены на которые стартуют от 50 рублей, поэтому проблем с заменой не будет.

Снять навесной замок можно тремя способами:

1. Перерезать дужку кусачками. Способ самый быстрый и щадящий, если подобный инструмент есть под рукой.

1. Перепилить дужку напильником или ножовкой по металлу. Некоторым даже удавалось сделать это пилкой для ногтей.

1. Снять запирающую конструкцию целиком, вместе с «собачками». Этот вариант подойдет для тех, кто не может открыть кодовый замок чемодана в гостинице или на отдыхе. Также это решение актуально, если навесной замочек без дужки (как на фото ниже).

Ситуация со встроенным замком чуть сложнее, но и его можно открыть так, чтобы не повредить чемодан:

1. Подобрать код. Этот метод 100% рабочий, но долгий и достаточно нудный. Нужно последовательно перебрать все возможные 999 комбинаций для кода из 3 цифр: 001, 002, 003, 004…

Для этого сначала выставляется стартовая комбинация «000», которая открывает большинство новых чемоданов. Затем последовательно от 0 до 9 изменяется ряд, отвечающий за единицы. Если ни один из вариантов не сработал, в ряду десятков 0 меняется на 1 и вся процедура повторяется. Дальше процесс идет по нарастающей, пока кодовый чемодан не откроется.

1. «Угадать» код. Для этого способа дополнительно понадобится фонарик. Им необходимо светить в щель возле «язычка» и медленно менять цифры. В процессе будет заметно, когда запор откроется. Стоит заметить, что этот метод работает не всегда, некоторые конструкции чемоданов не позволяют увидеть движение задвижки.

1. Метод щелчка. Этот вариант позволяет открыть недорогие кодовые чемоданы, он также подходит для навесных замков. Запоры на дорогих моделях дорожных сумок работают абсолютно беззвучно, поэтому для них этот способ не подходит.

Суть процесса в том, чтобы по очереди медленно проворачивать каждый ряд с цифрами. Когда плашка примет правильное положение, язычок выйдет из паза с тихим щелчком. Останется только дождаться звукового сигнала от каждого числового столбца.

1. Открыть ключом. Звучит банально, но практически каждый чемодан с кодовым замком можно открыть ключом. Главное, вспомнить, где хранится заветный ключик.

1. Найти паз. В некоторых замках четко виден паз. Нужно прокрутить все три барашка с цифрами так, чтобы он везде оказался сверху — это будет правильное положение для открытия (фото ниже). Иногда этот зазор настолько мал, что практически незаметен. В этом случае на помощь придет обычная иголка. Ее нужно плотно прижать к поверхности колесика при вращении. Острие четко укажет на щель (зацепится).

1. Нажать на боковые кнопки. В некоторых моделях есть специальные кнопки для экстренного вскрытия, если их зажать — замок откроется. Но здесь нужно учитывать два момента. Во-первых, такой бонус для забывчивых владельцев есть далеко не у всех брендов. Во-вторых, не всегда можно открыть чемодан без ключа. То есть нужно, не только зажимать предохранители, но и одновременно проворачивать ключик.

1. Современные чемоданы часто оснащены функцией TSA (Transportation Security Administration). Это означает, что такие модели можно вскрыть единым ключом, который есть только у таможенных служб.

Изначально, это все задумывалось с целью облегчения проверки багажа на таможне. До TSA, если замок не могли вскрыть, его просто ломали. Сейчас для удобства такие запоры помечают красным ромбом и названием, например, TSA007. Гипотетически, при проблемах с вскрытием такой дорожной сумки, можно обратиться в таможенную службу, чтобы они помогли с данным вопросом. Но тут, как повезет.

В некоторых случаях, нет времени на подбор: открыть чемодан с кодом нужно здесь и сейчас. Тогда остается только грубый взлом.

Для тканевых чемоданов, самый щадящий вариант: аккуратно разрезать молнию вдоль шва. В этом случае, дорожную сумку можно будет отремонтировать в специальной мастерской.

С пластиковыми чемоданами все чуть сложнее, здесь оптимальное место взлома будет зависеть от конструкции замка. Ломать можно:

• собачки (или снять их с молнии);
• защелку замка, просунув в щель твердый плоский предмет, например, отвертку (метод работает только на старых моделях);
• тело чемодана (выломать из него замок).

При применении первых двух способов дорожную сумку можно будет потом отремонтировать. Последний способ самый агрессивный, после него восстановить чемодан будет невозможно.

Бренды

Почему-то многие уверены, что есть какие-то секретные лайфхаки, которые помогут открыть чемодан Samsonite (Самсонайт), но не сработают с Newcom (Ньюком) или American tourister (Американ туристер). На деле же конструкции всех запоров практически идентичны и не существует хитрости, которая бы сработала только на продукции бренда Francesco Molinary (Франческо Молинари) или Redmond (Редмонд).

Единственное возможное отличие — это отсутствие или наличие функции TSA. Гипотетически, ее наличие дает одну дополнительная возможность открыть чемодан с замком TSA007 (о ней говорилось выше).

В остальном же все популярные бренды, открываются методом подбора кода. Кто-то перебирает по порядку все 999 вариантов, кто-то ориентируется на паз, свет фонарика или щелчок. Самые нетерпеливые ломают дорожный чемодан или несут его в специальную мастерскую.

Ниже представлен список популярных брендов, цифровые чемоданы которых можно открыть подбором номера:

Аналогично можно открыть старый советский чемодан производства СССР или китайский ноунейм. При условии, что просто забыт пароль, а не заклинил запирающий механизм.

Как сбросить код?

Этот вариант подойдет для тех, у кого чемодан открыт, но закрывать его на замок страшно, ибо пароль надежно забыт.

В этом случае как раз играет роль бренд дорожной сумки. Потому что для разных марок есть отличия, но они не столь существенны, поэтому поискать подходящий вариант можно методом проб и ошибок.

Во всех чемоданах есть специальная кнопка, для смены кода. У одних моделей она расположена на виду, как на фото ниже. У других утоплена внутрь так, что нажать ее можно только тонкой зубочисткой, авторучкой или иглой. У третьих добраться к клавише можно только изнутри (из-под подкладки).

Но суть везде одна и та же: при открытом чемодане зажимается чудо-кнопка и меняется код.

Из основных отличий в процедуре можно выделить два момента:

• у некоторых чемоданов прежде, чем сбросить код, нужно выставить стартовую комбинацию «000», а уже затем вводить новый пароль;

• иногда нажимать кнопку нужно дважды: первый раз — для сброса старого пароля, второй раз — для фиксации нового.

Как выбрать код?

Конечно, можно надеяться на то, что подойдет один из 10 вышеперечисленных способов, и получится самостоятельно открыть чемодан с трехзначным кодом. Но гораздо проще просто придумать пароль, который невозможно забыть — это поможет сэкономить время, нервы и деньги.

Есть 4 простых способа придумать надежный, но легкий код для чемодана. Для пароля подойдут:

• 3 последние цифры из года рождения (можно заменить на совокупность месяц+дата);
• использовать последние или первые цифры номера телефона, паспорта, СНИЛСа или любого другого документа, который всегда под рукой;
• назначить кодом номер дома, квартиры или машины;
• выбрать в качестве пароля памятную дату (день рождения ребенка, свадьбу и т.п.).

Для надежности выбранный код можно записать в телефон или блокнот, либо сообщить кому-то из близких людей. Это поможет уберечь отпуск от неприятных моментов.
