Can Boveda directly touch my products?

Yes. Boveda is FDA compliant and food safe. Boveda’s ingredients are all-natural. Inside each Boveda is salts and water sealed in a leakproof membrane.

Do I tear open the brown Boveda packet?

NO!!! DO NOT OPEN the brown packet itself. If your Boveda arrived individually wrapped in cellophane, remove that plastic overwrap before slipping the humidity control pack into your humidor.

When should I replace Boveda?

Every 2 to 4 months in a wood humidor or 6 to 9 months in an airtight plastic travel humidor or acrylic humidor. Subscribe to Boveda to have replacements automatically sent to you at a frequency that’s right for you.

Can I recharge Boveda?

No. Rehydrating a pack prevents it from reaching exact precision, sets you up for extreme humidity fluctuations and can introduce water-born contaminants into your humidor. Why risk it?

Can I use Boveda to season my wood humidor?

Yes. Use a Boveda Starter Kit to season a new wood humidor before adding cigars inside. The kit contains all you need to condition the wood and then maintain a safe RH for cigars for months.

Season a humidor, preserve cannabis, or protect your instrument using Boveda packs.

What do cigars, wooden instruments, and cannabis all have in common? They’re all super sensitive to humidity! That’s where Boveda comes in. These nifty little packs regulate the relative humidity (RH) inside of a container. Each pack holds a salt and water mixture within a membrane that allows vapor to flow in and out, absorbing and releasing moisture as needed.[1]
Pretty cool, right? But how do you know which RH level is best for your needs, or how many packs to use? How long does Boveda last, and how do you know when it’s time to toss it? If you’re curious about how to use Boveda to protect your prized instrument, cigar collection, or cannabis stash, keep reading to have all your questions answered.

  1. Step 1 Remove the plastic wrapper from a Boveda 84% RH pack.

Before your new wooden humidor can become the perfect home for your cigar collection, it needs to be seasoned with a Boveda 84% RH pack.[2]
Remove the plastic wrapper from the pack, but don’t tear open the pack itself.

  2. Step 2 Place the pack inside your empty humidor to raise the wood’s moisture level.

This keeps the wood from robbing moisture from your cigars.[3]

    • Use one Boveda size 60 pack for every 25 cigars your humidor can hold.
    • If your cigars need a temporary home while you season your humidor, zip them in a plastic bag along with one size 60 Boveda 69% RH pack for every 25 cigars.[4]

  3. Step 3 Wait for 14 days.

Close the lid and don’t open it for 2 weeks. It takes that long to raise the wood’s moisture level enough to be in balance with your cigars. It’s worth the wait![5]

    • Don’t bother using a hygrometer (an instrument for measuring humidity) while seasoning your humidor. No matter what the reading might say, the advice is the same: wait 14 days. Patience is key!
  4. Step 4 Throw out the used Boveda pack(s).

They aren’t reusable, and you definitely don’t want to store an 84% RH pack next to your cigars! While 84% RH Boveda is ideal for seasoning, the high humidity would ruin your collection if you left it in your humidor.[6]

    • If you live in a dry climate (or an area with seasonal dryness), season your humidor once or twice a year.
  5. Step 5 Stock your humidor.

Now you can add cigars to the humidor, along with fresh Boveda packs. 69% RH is the most popular choice, but if you live in a humid climate or if you’re storing Cuban cigars, opt for 65% RH.[7]

    • Place the packs anywhere in the humidor—you can even put them directly on top of your cigars; the packs are FDA-approved and won’t cause any damage.[8]
    • Use at least one Boveda size 60 pack for every 25 cigars your humidor can hold.[9]
    • Cuban cigars become moldy at a lower humidity level than most other cigars.[10]
    • It’s okay to include additional Boveda. It won’t raise the humidity more than is stated on the packs, and your Boveda will last longer. Just be sure to use packs with an identical RH value.[11]
  6. Step 6 Replace crispy or hard packs.

Boveda will last about 2-4 months in a wooden humidor, and 6-9 months in an airtight humidor. If a pack feels dry without many soft spots, it’s time to replace it.[12]
If the pack is completely hard, it’s expired—try to replace it sooner next time.

    • New Boveda feels jelly-like and squishy (some hardening in the corners is normal).[13]
  7. Advertisement

  1. Step 1 Place your cannabis in an airtight container.

Boveda locks in the flavor and aroma of cannabis while preserving its effectiveness. Put your bud in a container that seals tightly; Mason jars or Tupperware containers work great![14]

    • No container? A plastic bag that zips shut will do in a pinch.[15]
  2. Step 2 Tuck a Boveda pack into your container.

Remove the plastic wrap from either a 58% RH pack (if you prefer drier cannabis) or a 62% RH pack (for moister cannabis), and place it alongside your bud.[16]
One size 8 pack protects up to 1 ounce (28 grams). Have a huge stash? One size 67 pack protects up to 1 pound (450 grams) of flower![17]

    • It’s fine for Boveda packs to come in direct contact with cannabis, your bud is safe and sound.[18]
    • It’s impossible to add too much Boveda to your container. As long as the packs have the same RH, you’re golden! Boveda lasts longer when you use extra packs.[19]
  3. Step 3 Toss out old packs.

Boveda lasts anywhere from 2-6 months depending on your cannabis storage container and the surrounding environment. New Boveda packs are pliable, old packs feel dry or crispy, and expired packs are hard. Swap out the packs when there aren’t many soft spots left. [20]

  4. Advertisement

  1. Step 1 Insert packs into a Boveda fabric holder.

When you’re using Boveda to regulate the humidity in an instrument case, you’ll need to use a fabric holder to store the packs. Remove the plastic wrap from a size 70 49% RH pack and tuck it inside the fabric pouch.[21]

    • A Boveda fabric holder extends the life of the packs, protects the instrument from damage, and acts as a barrier in case of an accidental puncture. Fabric holders are available on the Boveda website.[22]
    • Use 1 or 2 Boveda packs for small wooden instruments, as well as for electric wooden instruments with a solid or semi-hollow body. Larger wooden instruments require 4 packs.[23]
  2. Step 2 Add the filled fabric holder to your case.

Choose a location that allows for decent airflow, making sure it’s away from any pinch points. Good locations include under the neck of the instrument or placed gently on the strings.[24]

    • Boveda is safe for stringed instruments and bows.[25]
  3. Step 3 Keep the lid closed.

Boveda lasts longer when you keep the case shut—even when your instrument isn’t inside it. Guess you’ll have to put out a jar for tips instead.[26]

  4. Step 4 Swap out old packs for new ones.

Boveda lasts between 2-6 months when kept in a fabric holder inside an instrument case. Room-temperature Boveda packs should be pliable; if there aren’t many soft spots left, chuck them in the garbage and replace them with fresh packs.[27]

    • If your case has been out in the cold, the packs may harden. Don’t toss them out yet! Let them warm to room temperature then try squeezing them. If the texture is like thick jelly or dense clay, it’s still working![28]
    • The temperature change won’t impact the effectiveness of the product.[29]

  • Don’t rehydrate old packs. While some sites suggest “recharging” Boveda packs by soaking them in distilled water, it isn’t a good idea. Rehydrated packs don’t regulate humidity as well as new ones, so your items would be at risk. Considering how much you spent on the goods you’re trying to protect, it’s worth investing in fresh packs.[31]

Humidipak’s 2-way humidity control solves every problem with
refillable humidifiers.

Never guess if or when to refill your humidifier
again.

Cycles in humidity are eliminated.

Choose the RH level you prefer — 65, 69, 72, or
75%.

No more hassle of using distilled water.

Bóveda is available in four different RH levels—65, 69, 72
and 75 percent—allowing consumers to choose their desired RH level based on the
type of cigars they smoke and/or the moisture-barrier qualities of the humidor.
For example, a humidor that doesn’t hold moisture very well may need a higher
humidity level just to compensate for the higher moisture loss.

TIP: You can extend the life of your Boveda packs! Before the packs dry out, when they feel grainy to the touch, submerge in distilled water for 3 days , then lay it on a paper towel and pat dry before putting it back in the humidor. If the pack is completely dry, submerge for 5 days in distilled water.

Simply place the correct number of Bóveda packets inside
your humidor to maintain a precise relative humidity. The number of Bóveda
packets to use depends on the cubic volume of the humidor—regardless of how
many cigars are actually stored inside.  REPLACE PACKETS EVERY 2 MONTHS.

As a guide, use one Bóveda packet for every 25 cigars the
humidor can hold. For example, a 50-count humidor would need two Bóveda
packets; a 75-count humidor would need three Bóveda packets, and so on. The
only exception to this guideline is for a small 25-count humidor where a
minimum of two packets is still needed due to surface area and volume.

Each Bóveda packet consists of a specially prepared
saturated solution of pure water and natural salt. This saturated solution is
contained within a water-vapor permeable “reverse osmosis” membrane. Within a
closed desktop humidor Bóveda maintains a predetermined level of (RH) by
releasing or absorbing purified water-vapor—as needed—through the membrane.

Bóveda provides the cleanest and most purified humidity of all
other products available on the market today.

For humidors made in
China…

Some humidors, although made well, lack the proper moisture
barrier on the bottom-side of the humidor. For some reason, some humidor
manufacturers give great attention to the quality of the sides, top and seal
locations of their humidors but neglect the side that nobody sees—the bottom.
This is particularly common in humidors that are made in China. An enormous
amount of moisture evaporates through the bottom side of many of the humidors
that are made in China because the bottom is merely a thin piece of wood with a
felt covering—and absolutely no moisture barrier coating whatsoever. For these
humidors, you may need to increase the quantity of Bóveda packets in order to
«catch up» to the rate of moisture loss through the bottom.

FAQ

Can I lay the
Bóveda packets directly on top of my cigars?

Yes. Unlike all refillable humidifiers, Bóveda can be placed
directly in contact with your cigars without any risk to them whatsoever. And
since Bóveda emits the cleanest, most purified water-vapor available, and since
they will only emit the perfect amount of water-vapor—not too much and not too
little—the cigars that are in direct contact will never get over-humidified.

Do I need to
activate the Bóveda packets?

No. Bóveda packets are ready to use when you receive them.
All you need to do is take each Bóveda packet out of the clear over-wrap and
simply place them inside your desktop humidor and you’re done. That’s right,
there’s absolutely no work or effort required on your part. By using Bóveda,
you don’t have to adjust any valves or try to figure out if you’ve put in too
much or not enough water and you never have to fill or refill your device with
water again—ever.

What RH level
should I choose?

Choosing the correct Bóveda RH level depends on two
factors—(1) the effectiveness of your humidor, and (2) your own personal taste.
If you smoke cigars from different countries of origin, our recommendation is
to maintain your humidor at 68 to 69%, as this will be a very good level for
all types of cigars and blends. Therefore, in order to compensate for the rate
of moisture loss that occurs in wood humidors, you will need to choose the
Bóveda 72% just to maintain the desired level of 68 to 69%. In non-wood humidors,
on the other hand, such as hard plastic or Tupperware, the Bóveda packets will
maintain the RH at exactly the level stated on the front of each packet.

Boveda — Two-Way Humidity Control for Cigar Humidors

Boveda - Two Way Humidity Control for Cigar Humidors

Common Questions About Using Boveda:

Why shouldn’t I use Boveda with other humidification devices?
Boveda was designed as a stand-alone 2-way moisture control. When you introduce a wet sponge, crystal, gel or beads, Boveda is absorbing the very high humidity given off by these 1-way humidification devices, giving you mixed results. Just use at least one Boveda per 25 cigar capacity for perfect and predictably precise results.

Can Boveda directly touch my tobacco?
Absolutely. Boveda is 100% safe to lay on / in / amongst your tobacco.

How do I choose the right number of Boveda?
We recommend using at least one 60 gram Boveda per 25 cigars your humidor holds, even if it isn’t full. It’s still air space and wood that needs proper humidification. And because Boveda will never over-humidify beyond the number on the pack, using more than is recommended will just work more efficiently and need to be replaced less often. So with Boveda, you can never buy more than you need.

When do I know when they need to be replaced?
All Boveda will turn into a solid wafer when they’re dead. So it’s short of that, when there aren’t many soft spots left, that you’ll want to replace them. Pronounced crystallization and hardening of the corners first is completely normal.

What humidity level do I need?
Boveda is available in 62, 65, 69, 72, 75 and 84 (exclusively for seasoning). All Boveda are accurate to +/- 1% of the RH printed on the pack in an air-tight environment. Humidors are not air tight. Depending on humidor quality and ambient conditions, it’s not uncommon for the actual RH to be stable anywhere from 2-6 points below the Boveda RH you’ve chosen. This is why we recommend 72% for your first set after seasoning. If it’s 72 on the nose, you’re perfect. If it drops a few points, you’re still perfect. Based on how your humidor performs, you can decide whether to move to 62, 65, 69 or 75.

I’ve been using my humidor for a while, do I need to re-season?

A) If an accurate hygrometer (calibrate it with our calibration kit) tells you you’re 60% or less, re-season it with our 84% Boveda. While the humidor is re-seasoning, REMOVE all cigars, put them in Tupperware with 69 or 72% and they’ll be perfect while your humidor conditions. It MAY NOT take the usual 14 days to season, since you’re starting somewhere in the middle. Calibrate your hygro with our calibration kit and only leave the 84% in (1 per 25 cigars the humidor holds) until the RH inside reaches 68-72%.
B) If an accurate hygrometer (calibrate it with our calibration kit) tells you it’s 60% RH or more, just use the 1 Boveda per 25 cigars it holds in 72%. This way, the 72’s are doing the rest of the seasoning while caring for your cigars and keep you at a safe RH once it’s finished. NOTE: Because the Boveda are essentially seasoning while caring for the cigars, they’re working double hard. So the first set of Boveda will not last as long as subsequent sets will.
C) If you haven’t calibrated your hygrometer with our kit, you can never be certain what’s happening in your humidor or how to fix it. Hygrometers are imprecise and require calibration. With our one step kit, you’ll know the accuracy of your hygrometer in 24 hours.

Do I use Boveda along with sponge/crytals/gel/beads?
No, throw them out. They’re only reservoirs for holding water and only give off 100% humidity – despite their claims. Those items give off flavors and films that keep you from enjoying your cigars the way the master blender intended.

How To Use Boveda In Your Humidor

Step 1: Determine Correct Number of Boveda to Use:

(*As a rule, use 1 Boveda per 25 cigars in a wood humidor,
even if the humidor isn’t full. Boveda will never over-humidify,
so you can never use too many.)

Step 2: Remove Preferred Boveda RH From Overwrap:

Step 3: Place Boveda in Cedar Holders:

Step 3: Or, Place Boveda in Meal Holder:

Step 3: Or, Lay Boveda directly on Humidor / Cigars:
Step 4: Close Lid Tightly:

Step 5: Replace Boveda When Firm, About 60-90 Days:
