Каждые 100 мл лосьона содержат:
Бетаметазона валерат 0.122 г (эквивалентно Бетаметазона 0.1 г)
Вспомогательные компоненты:
Карбомер, изопропиловый спирт, натрия гидроксид, вода очищенная.
Свойства:
Бетаметазон оказывает противовоспалительное и противоаллергическое действие посредством торможения высвобождения цитокинов и медиаторов воспаления, уменьшения метаболизма арахидоновой кислоты, индуцирования образования липокортинов, обладающих противоотечной активностью, снижения проницаемости сосудов.
Микродисперсия этого глюкокортикостероида (ГКС) в нежирной, не имеющей запаха, не оставляющей следов на одежде, легко смывающейся основе обеспечивает эффективное проникновение в кожу и быстрое начало действия.
Показания:
Чувствительные к стероидам дерматозы кожи головы, такие как псориаз, себорея кожи головы, воспаление, связанное с сильной перхотью.
Способ применения и дозы:
Взрослые и дети старше 1 года:
Небольшое количество бетновейта следует наносить на пораженный участок 2 раза в день до появления улучшения. Затем в качестве поддерживающей дозы нужно наносить препарат один раз в день или даже реже.
Дети до 1 года: можно использовать препарат после консультации с врачом.
Противопоказания :
Розовые угри и обыкновенные (юношеские) угри. Первичные вирусные инфекции кожи (например, пузырьковый лишай, ветряная оспа). Гиперчувствительность (повышенная чувствительность) к препарату. Применение препарата бетновейт не рекомендуется для лечения первичных кожных поражений при грибковой (например кандидоз, трихофития) и бактериальной (например, импетиго /поверхностное воспаление кожи, характеризующееся возникновением гнойников, засыхающих с образованием корок) инфекции, перианального и полового зуда (зуда в области заднего прохода и наружных половых органов). Дерматоз у детей младше одного года, включая дерматит (воспаление кожи) и пеленочную сыпь.
Беременность также является противопоказанием.
Меры предосторожности :
Избегать попадания препарата в глаза, нельзя наносить на кожу вблизи глаз и на слизистые оболочки.
Не рекомендуется длительное применение на коже лица — возможно развитие дерматита по типу розацеа, периорального дерматита, атрофии кожи и акне; избегать применения в аногенитальной области.
Применение лосьона у детей должно быть как можно менее продолжительным (опасность системного всасывания пропорционально большего количества активных компонентов из-за преобладания площади кожных покровов над массой тела и недостаточной зрелости эпидермиса).
При появлении признаков аллергических реакций или местного раздражения лечение должно быть прекращено.
Побочные эффекты:
Местные реакции: жжение, раздражение, сухость, гипопигментация, зуд кожи, фолликулит, гипертрихоз, угревая сыпь.
При применении окклюзионных повязок — мацерация кожи, стрии, атрофия кожи, вторичное инфицирование, потница.
При длительном применении — атрофия кожи, местный гирсутизм, телеангиэктазии, пурпура, гипопигментация, гипертрихоз.
Системные реакции: при нанесении на большие поверхности возможны системные проявления побочного действия ГКС (задержка роста, синдром Иценко-Кушинга, доброкачественное повышение внутричерепного давления после окончания лечения, гипергликемия, глюкозурия, гипокалиемия, повышение АД) или салицилатов (бледность, повышенная утомляемость, сонливость, гипервентиляция на фоне тахипноэ, тошнота, рвота, нарушения слуха, спутанность сознания).
Способ хранения :
Хранить при температуре не выше 30 градусов.
Упаковка :
Картонная коробка содержит бутылку 30 мл и бумажную инструкцию.
Дозировка зависит от заболевания, его тяжести и ответа больного на проводимое лечение. Таблетки: начальная доза у взрослых — от 0,25 до 8 мг ежедневно; у детей — 0,017 — 0,25 мг/кг. При отеке мозга — 0,5–1 мл (коматозным больным — 2–4 мг 4 раза в день); реакция отторжения почечного аллотрансплантата — в/в капельно 60 мг в первые 24 ч. При мышечно-скелетных нарушениях доза зависит от размера сустава или места введения (от 0,4 до 6,0 мг).
Субконъюнктивально — 0,5 мл/2 мг.
Бетновейт®
Наружно. Небольшое количество крема наносят на поражeнные участки тела 2–3 раза в день и осторожно втирают. После появления эффекта кратность аппликаций сокращают до 1–2 раз в сутки.
Детям назначают 1 раз в день.
В случае выраженного гиперкератоза (псориатические бляшки на локтях и коленях), эффект Бетновейта может быть усилен наложением на пораженные участки окклюзионных повязок с помощью полиэтиленовой пленки (только на ночь), а при улучшении состояния поддерживающая терапия проводится регулярными аппликациями без повязок.
При отсутствии регулярного врачебного наблюдения курс лечение не должен превышать 7 дней.
У детей и у больных с поражением кожи лица курс лечения не должен превышать 5 дней.
Бетновейт®-ГМ
Наружно. Небольшое количество крема наносят на пораженные участки тела 2–3 раза в день у взрослых до появления признаков улучшения, после чего возможно продолжение применения препарата 1 раз в день. Длительность лечения определяется индивидуально и зависит от нозологической формы и тяжести заболевания.
Бетновейт®-С
Наружно, на пораженные участки, слегка втирая, наносят тонким слоем 2–3 раза в день. При необходимости накладывают окклюзионные повязки, которые меняют каждые 24 ч (из-за задержки испарения пота и кожного дыхания создается влажная камера, способствующая разрыхлению рогового слоя и ускоренному, более глубокому проникновению препарата — примерно в 100 раз большему, чем при простом нанесении).
Курс лечения — до 3 нед. При необходимости длительного лечения применяют реже — через день. При терапии хронических заболеваний лечение следует продолжать еще некоторое время после исчезновения всех симптомов, чтобы избежать рецидива заболевания.
Бетновейт®-Н
Местно. Глаза: по 1 — 2 капли закапывают в пораженный глаз каждые 1 — 2 ч в течение дня и с интервалом 2 ч — в течение ночи; при смягчении острых симптомов — 4–6 раз в день.

Betnovate Scalp Application® рекомендуют вводить в/м при необходимости системного поступления глюкокортикоидов в организм; непосредственно в пораженную мягкую ткань или в виде внутрисуставных и околосуставных инъекций при артритах, в виде в/к инъекций при различных дерматологических заболеваниях и в виде инъекций в очаг поражения при некоторых заболеваниях стопы.
Режим дозирования и способ введения устанавливают индивидуально, в зависимости от показаний, тяжести заболевания и реакции пациента.
При системной терапии начальная доза Betnovate Scalp Applicationа в большинстве случаев составляет 1 –2 мл. Введение повторяют по мере необходимости, в зависимости от состояния пациента.
Препарат вводят в/м, глубоко:
— при тяжелых состояниях, требующих принятия экстренных мер, начальная доза составляет 2 мл;
— при различных дерматологических заболеваниях, как правило, достаточно введения 1 мл суспензии Betnovate Scalp Applicationа®;
— при заболеваниях дыхательной системы; начало действия препарата наступает в течение нескольких часов после в/м инъекции суспензии; при бронхиальной астме, сенной лихорадке, аллергическом бронхите и аллергическом рините существенное улучшение состояния достигается после введения 1–2 мл Betnovate Scalp Applicationа®;
— при острых и хронических бурситах начальная доза для в/м введения составляет 1 –2 мл суспензии. При необходимости проводят несколько повторных инъекций.
Если удовлетворительный клинический ответ не наступает через определенный промежуток времени, Betnovate Scalp Application® следует отменить и назначить другую терапию.
При местном введении одновременное применение местноанестезирующего препарата необходимо лишь в редких случаях. Если оно желательно, используют 1 или 2% растворы прокаина гидрохлорида или лидокаина, не содержащие метилпарабена, пропилпарабена, фенола и других подобных веществ. При этом смешивание производят в шприце, сначала набирая в шприц из флакона требуемую дозу суспензии Betnovate Scalp Applicationа®. Затем в этот же шприц забирают из ампулы требуемое количество местного анестетика и встряхивают в течение короткого периода времени.
При острых бурситах (субдельтовидном, подлопаточном, локтевом и преднадколенниковом) введение 1–2 мл суспензии в синовиальную сумку через несколько часов облегчает боль и восстанавливает подвижность сустава. После купирования обострения при хронических бурситах применяют меньшие дозы препарата.
При острых тендосиновитах, тендинитах и перитендинитах 1 инъекция Betnovate Scalp Applicationа® улучшает состояние больного; при хронических — инъекцию повторяют в зависимости от реакции пациента. Следует избегать введения препарата непосредственно в сухожилие.
Внутрисуставное введение Betnovate Scalp Applicationа в дозе 0,5–2 мл снимает боль, ограничение подвижности суставов при ревматоидном артрите и остеоартрите в течение 2–4 ч после введения. Длительность терапевтического действия значительно варьируется и может составлять 4 и более недель.
Рекомендуемые дозы препарата при введении в крупные суставы составляют от 1 до 2 мл, в средние — 0,5–2 мл, в мелкие — 0,25–0,5 мл.
При некоторых дерматологических заболеваниях эффективно в/к введение Betnovate Scalp Applicationа ® непосредственно в очаг поражения, доза составляет 0,2 мл/см2. Очаг равномерно обкалывают, используя туберкулиновый шприц и иглу диаметром около 0,9 мм. Общее количество введенного препарата на всех участках не должно превышать 1 мл в течение 1 нед.
Рекомендуемые разовые дозы препарата (при интервале между введениями 1 нед) при бурситах: при омозолелости 0,25–0,5 мл (как правило, эффективны 2 инъекции), при шпоре — 0,5 мл, при ограничении подвижности большого пальца стопы — 0,5 мл, при синовиальной кисте — 0,25–0,5 мл, при тендосиновите — 0,5 мл, при остром подагрическом артрите — 0,5–1,0 мл. Для введения рекомендуют применять туберкулиновый шприц с иглой диаметром около 1 мм.
После достижения терапевтического эффекта поддерживающую дозу подбирают путем постепенного снижения начальной дозы за счет уменьшения концентрации бетаметазона в растворе, вводимом через соответствующие интервалы времени. Снижение продолжают до достижения минимальной эффективной дозы.
При возникновении или угрозе возникновения стрессовой ситуации (не связанной с заболеванием) может возникнуть необходимость в увеличении дозы Betnovate Scalp Applicationа®.
Отмену препарата после длительной терапии проводят путем постепенного снижения дозы.
Наблюдение за состоянием пациента осуществляют, по крайней мере, в течение года по окончании длительной терапии или после применения в высоких дозах.
Местно.
Белодерм® экспресс, спрей для наружного применения, распыляют на пораженный участок кожи с расстояния около 5–15 см, путем одного или нескольких нажатий на дозатор, 2 раза в сутки, если врачом не предписан другой режим применения. Для некоторых пациентов адекватная терапия может быть обеспечена при менее частом применении.
При одном нажатии на дозатор из флакона поступает около 0,1 мл раствора. Максимальная недельная доза составляет 50 мл, что соответствует приблизительно 500 нажатиям.
Продолжительность лечения зависит от эффективности и переносимости терапии и обычно составляет не более 4 нед. В течение года возможно повторение терапии. У детей и пациентов с поражением кожи лица курс лечения не должен превышать 5 дней. Если клиническое улучшение не наступает, необходимо уточнить диагноз.
Применение препарата возможно только согласно тем показаниям, тому способу применения и в тех дозах, которые указаны в инструкции.
Местно. Дозу устанавливают индивидуально.
Заболевания глаз: в конъюнктивальный мешок по 1–2 капли каждый час или каждые 2 ч в начале терапии, с последующим постепенным снижением кратности применения в зависимости от терапевтического эффекта.
Заболевания уха: в наружный слуховой проход по 3–4 капли каждые 2–3 ч. После достижения желаемого эффекта следует постепенно снизить кратность применения препарата до необходимой, обеспечивая контроль над симптомами заболевания.
Показания к применению
Атопический дерматит, диффузный нейродермит, контактный дерматит (простой и аллергический), простой хронический лишай (ограниченный нейродермит), эксфолиативный дерматит, крапивница, герпетиформный дерматит, себорейный дерматит; узловатая почесуха Гайда, экзема, псориаз, красный плоский лишай; зуд кожи; дискоидная красная волчанка; генерализованная эритродермия (в составе комплексной терапии).

4. Clinical particulars
4.1 Therapeutic indications
Steroid responsive dermatoses of the scalp, such as psoriasis and seborrhoeic capitis, inflammation associated with severe dandruff.
4.2 Posology and method of administration
A small quantity of Betnovate Scalp Application should be applied to the scalp night and morning until improvement is noticeable. It may then be possible to sustain improvement by applying once a day, or less frequently.
For topical application.
This product is flammable. Keep the liquid away from open fire and flames and all sources of ignition including smoking during application and immediately after use.
Paediatric population
Betamethasone valerate is contraindicated in children under one year of age.
Children are more likely to develop local and systemic side effects of topical corticosteroids and, in general, require shorter courses and less potent agents than adults; therefore, courses should be limited to five days and occlusion should not be used.
Care should be taken when using betamethasone valerate to ensure the amount applied is the minimum that provides therapeutic benefit.
Elderly
Clinical studies have not identified differences in responses between the elderly and younger patients. The greater frequency of decreased hepatic or renal function in the elderly may delay elimination if systemic absorption occurs. Therefore the minimum quantity should be used for the shortest duration to achieve the desired clinical benefit.
Renal / Hepatic Impairment
In case of systemic absorption (when application is over a large surface area for a prolonged period) metabolism and elimination may be delayed therefore increasing the risk of systemic toxicity. Therefore the minimum quantity should be used for the shortest duration to achieve the desired clinical benefit.
4.3 Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients listed in section 6.1.
Infections of the scalp. Dermatoses in children under one year of age, including dermatitis.
4.4 Special warnings and precautions for use
Betamethasone valerate should be used with caution in patients with a history of local hypersensitivity to other corticosteroids. Local hypersensitivity reactions (see section 4.8) may resemble symptoms of the condition under treatment.
Manifestations of hypercortisolism (Cushing’s syndrome) and reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression, leading to glucocorticosteroid insufficiency, can occur in some individuals as a result of increased systemic absorption of topical steroids. If either of the above are observed, withdraw the drug gradually by reducing the frequency of application, or by substituting a less potent corticosteroid. Abrupt withdrawal of treatment may result in glucocorticosteroid insufficiency (see section 4.8).
Risk factors for increased systemic effects are:
o Potency and formulation of topical steroid
o Duration of exposure
o Application to a large surface area
o Increasing hydration of the stratum corneum
o Use on occluded areas of the skin
o Use on thin skin areas
o Use on broken skin or other conditions where the skin barrier may be impaired
o In comparison with adults, children may absorb proportionally larger amounts of topical corticosteroids and thus be more susceptible to systemic adverse effects. This is because children have an immature skin barrier and a greater surface area to body weight ratio compared with adults.
Paediatric population
In infants and children under 12 years of age, treatment courses should be limited to five days and occlusion should not be used; long-term continuous topical corticosteroid therapy should be avoided where possible, as adrenal suppression can occur.
Infection risk with occlusion
Bacterial infection is encouraged by the warm, moist conditions within skin folds or caused by occlusive dressings. When using occlusive dressings, the skin should be cleansed before a fresh dressing is applied.
Use in Psoriasis
Topical corticosteroids should be used with caution in psoriasis as rebound relapses, development of tolerances, risk of generalised pustular psoriasis and development of local or systemic toxicity due to impaired barrier function of the skin have been reported in some cases. If used in psoriasis careful patient supervision is important.
Visual disturbance
Visual disturbance may be reported with systemic and topical corticosteroid use. If a patient presents with symptoms such as blurred vision or other visual disturbances, the patient should be considered for referral to an ophthalmologist for evaluation of possible causes which may include cataract, glaucoma or rare diseases such as central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) which have been reported after use of systemic and topical corticosteroids.
Scalp Application
Patients should be advised to:
• Keep the preparation away from the eyes
• avoid smoking whilst applying Betnovate scalp application
• avoid fire, flame and heat including use of hair dryer after application
4.5 Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction
Co-administered drugs that can inhibit CYP3A4 (e.g. ritonavir, itraconazole) have been shown to inhibit the metabolism of corticosteroids leading to increased systemic exposure. The extent to which this interaction is clinically relevant depends on the dose and route of administration of the corticosteroids and the potency of the CYP3A4 inhibitor.
4.6 Fertility, pregnancy and lactation
Fertility
There are no data in humans to evaluate the effect of topical corticosteroids on fertility.
Pregnancy
There are limited data from the use of betamethasone valerate in pregnant women.
Topical administration of corticosteroids to pregnant animals can cause abnormalities of foetal development. (see section 5.3).
The relevance of this finding to humans has not been established; however, administration of betamethasone valerate during pregnancy should only be considered if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the foetus. The minimum quantity should be used for the minimum duration.
Lactation
The safe use of topical corticosteroids during lactation has not been established.
It is not known whether topical administration of corticosteroids could result in sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable amounts in breast milk. Administration of betamethasone valerate during lactation should only be considered if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the infant.
If used during lactation betamethasone valerate should not be applied to the breasts to avoid accidental ingestion by the infant.
4.7 Effects on ability to drive and use machines
There have been no studies to investigate the effect of betamethasone valerate on driving performance or the ability to operate machinery. A detrimental effect on such activities would not be anticipated from the adverse reaction profile of topical betamethasone valerate.
4.8 Undesirable effects
Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are listed below by MedDRA system organ class and by frequency. Frequencies are defined as: very common (≥1/10), common (≥1/100 and <1/10), uncommon (≥1/1,000 and <1/100), rare (≥1/10,000 and <1/1,000) and very rare (<1/10,000), including isolated reports.

4.9 Overdose
Symptoms and signs
Topically applied betamethasone valerate may be absorbed in sufficient amounts to produce systemic effects. Acute overdosage is very unlikely to occur, however, in the case of chronic overdosage or misuse the features of hypercortisolism may occur (see section 4.8).
Treatment
In the event of overdose, betamethasone valerate should be withdrawn gradually by reducing the frequency of application, or by substituting a less potent corticosteroid because of the risk of glucocorticosteroid insufficiency.
Further management should be as clinically indicated or as recommended by the national poisons centre, where available.
5. Pharmacological properties
5.1 Pharmacodynamic properties

Mechanism of action
Topical corticosteroids act as anti-inflammatory agents via multiple mechanisms to inhibit late phase allergic reactions including decreasing the density of mast cells, decreasing chemotaxis and activation of eosinophils, decreasing cytokine production by lymphocytes, monocytes, mast cells and eosinophils, and inhibiting the metabolism of arachidonic acid.
Pharmacodynamic effects
Topical corticosteroids have anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties.
5.2 Pharmacokinetic properties
Absorption
Topical corticosteroids can be systemically absorbed from intact healthy skin. The extent of percutaneous absorption of topical corticosteroids is determined by many factors, including the vehicle and the integrity of the epidermal barrier. Occlusion, inflammation and/or other disease processes in the skin may also increase percutaneous absorption.
Distribution
The use of pharmacodynamic endpoints for assessing the systemic exposure of topical corticosteroids is necessary because circulating levels are well below the level of detection.
Metabolism
Once absorbed through the skin, topical corticosteroids are handled through pharmacokinetic pathways similar to systemically administered corticosteroids. They are metabolised, primarily in the liver.
Elimination
Topical corticosteroids are excreted by the kidneys. In addition, some corticosteroids and their metabolites are also excreted in the bile.
5.3 Preclinical safety data
Reproductive toxicity
Subcutaneous administration of betamethasone valerate to mice or rats at doses ≥0.1 mg/kg/day or rabbits at doses ≥12 micrograms/kg/day during pregnancy produced foetal abnormalities including cleft palate and intrauterine growth retardation.
The effect on fertility of betamethasone valerate has not been evaluated in animals.

What is Betnovate Scalp and what is it used for?
Betnovate Scalp Application is a topical steroid medication used to treat inflammatory dermatoses of the scalp. It works by reducing inflammation and itchiness caused by eczema or psoriasis. It is available in two strengths: 0.05% and 0.1%. Both strengths contain the same active ingredient. However, the stronger strength may cause more side effects.
An itchy, or irritated scalp can have several causes — from dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis to psoriasis or allergic reactions. If you’re unsure, it’s always best to consult your GP.
How does Betnovate Scalp work?
The active ingredient in Betnovate is Betamethasone, a corticosteroid that is applied topically to the affected area. Betnovate Scalp Application can effectively treat symptoms of irritation, redness, and inflammation, and can help in relieving chronic conditions where weaker treatments have failed to work. Betamethasone works by blocking the release of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines that cause the symptoms of eczema.
Betnovate scalp application is not intended for use every day. Instead, it should be used to manage sudden flare-ups. Once Betnovate has taken effect, you should follow up the treatment with a moisturiser or emollient to keep the skin healthy. Always follow the instructions included in the packaging carefully.
Alternatives to Betnovate Scalp
Prescription-strength corticosteroid treatments are more likely than milder treatments to cause unwanted side effects. It is therefore recommended that you try over-the-counter treatments first to check whether they are effective for you. There are a few non-prescription alternatives to Betnovate Scalp that can be used to treat a dry scalp, these treatments include:
Prescription medication is always stronger and more effective than milder, over-the-counter treatment options. However, it’s always best to try these first, before you move on to more powerful medications. There are a few non-prescription treatments you can try:
- Nizoral shampoo
- Alphosyl 2 in 1 Shampoo
- Neutrogena T-Gel
- Selsun shampoo
There are also some prescription-only alternatives to Betnovate Scalp Application. These include:
Dovobet gel, a topical corticosteroid treatment paired with a form of vitamin D. This works well with scalp psoriasis, rather than an itchy scalp, which may be the result of any number of conditions.
Elocon Lotion, another topical corticosteroid that can help to relieve itching and irritation of the skin. However, it may also cause inflammation of the hair follicles.
Betnovate Scalp: effects on the hair
When using Betnovate Scalp Application, be sure to follow the advice below:
- Don’t use a hairdryer directly after applying Betnovate cream and keep your head away from sources of heat
- Give the treatment time to soak into your scalp and don’t wash it off by accident
- Betnovate may cause hair growth, but it’s not suitable as a treatment for hair loss.
- Do not use Betnovate in combination with hair dye — it should only ever be applied to dry hair

How to use Betnovate Scalp
Apply to the affected areas of the scalp twice a day, preferably once in the morning and once at night. You will be advised by your GP on how long you should continue your treatment.
Always wash your hair and dry thoroughly before use, and keep your hair away from sources of heat after application, as Betnovate is flammable.
Instructions for use:
- Wash your hands.
- Unscrew the bottle cap and place the nozzle on the affected area of the scalp.
- Cover the area with a thin and even layer of Betnovate — you can rub it in, but you don’t need to if you’d prefer not to.
- Wash your hands once more.
Betnovate Scalp ingredients
Betnovate Scalp Application contains the active ingredient: betamethasone valerate 0.122%.
It also contains the inactive ingredients: Carbomer, Isopropyl Alcohol, Sodium Hydroxide, and Purified Water.
Betnovate Scalp side effects
Common side effects associated with Betnovate Scalp Application can include:
- a feeling of burning, irritation, or itching where the liquid is applied.
- stretch marks may develop
- veins under the surface of your skin may become more noticeable
- increased hair growth and changes in skin colour
- thinning of your skin and it may also damage more easily
- weight gain, rounding of the face
- high blood pressure
Stop using Betnovate Scalp and seek immediate medical attention if:
- Your skin condition gets more severe or becomes swollen during the use of Betnovate
- You suspect you may be allergic to Betnovate
- You have acute psoriasis and you get raised bumps with pus under the skin. This is known as pustular psoriasis, and while very rare, will require immediate attention from a medical professional
- If any of the above side effects become serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed here or in the accompanying Patient Information Leaflet, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Betnovate Scalp warnings
If anything listed below applies to you, you should not use Betnovate Scalp Application:
- You are allergic to betamethasone valerate or any of the other listed ingredients of Betnovate.
- You have a skin infection on your scalp
- You have previously suffered an allergic reaction to another steroid.
- You are applying the liquid under an airtight dressing. These dressings make it easier for the active ingredient to pass through the skin, which may result in your body absorbing too much.
Betnovate Scalp use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding
If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you must consult your doctor before using Betnovate.
What is Betnovate scalp application used for?
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis affecting the scalp.
- Psoriasis affecting the scalp.
How does Betnovate scalp application work?
Betnovate scalp application contains the active ingredient betamethasone valerate, which is a type of medicine called a topical corticosteroid.
Corticosteroids are medicines used for reducing inflammation. Inflammation of the skin is caused by the release of various substances produced by the immune system. These substances cause blood vessels to widen, resulting in the irritated area becoming red, swollen, itchy and painful, as is seen in dermatitis or eczema.
When betamethasone is applied to the skin it works by acting inside the skin cells to decrease the release of the inflammatory substances. This reduces swelling, redness and itching.
There is a range of potencies of corticosteroids applied to the skin. Betamethasone valerate 0.1% is classed as a potent corticosteroid. It is prescribed to treat inflammatory skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis that have not responded to weaker corticosteroids.
Betnovate scalp application is thinner and easier to apply to the scalp than Betnovate ointment or cream. It is used to treat inflammatory disorders of the scalp.
How do I use Betnovate scalp application?
- Betnovate scalp application should be applied to the scalp twice a day (morning and night) to begin with. As soon as the condition starts to improve, you should use it less frequently, as directed by your doctor.
- The liquid should be applied thinly to the areas of the scalp that need treating using the nozzle of the bottle. You can rub the liquid into your scalp if you wish, but then leave it to dry naturally (don’t use a hairdryer). The betamethasone will be left on the scalp — it should not be washed off. If you need to wash your hair you should wash and dry your hair before applying the scalp application.
- Take care to avoid the scalp application running onto the face or into the eyes. Rinse with cold water if accidental contact occurs. Avoid applying it to broken skin.
- Wash your hands after applying the scalp application to avoid accidentally transferring it to other areas.
- Don’t apply moisturisers to the same area of skin at the same time as this medicine. Try to leave at least 30 minutes between applying moisturisers and this medicine, as otherwise the moisturiser could dilute the corticosteroid and potentially make it less effective.
- If there is no improvement in your scalp after two to four weeks of treatment you should consult your doctor. Repeat courses maybe necessary to control flare-ups of psoriasis or eczema, but should only be started on the advice of your doctor.
Things to know about Betnovate scalp application before using
- Betnovate scalp application contains flammable alcohol. Do not apply it near naked flames or lit objects, such as gas and electric fires and lit cigarettes, or near other sources of heat such as hairdryers. Do not smoke during or immediately after applying it and do not use a hairdryer to dry the hair after applying it.
- This medicine is for external use on the scalp only. It must not be used on the face or any other part of the body apart from the scalp.
- You should never use Betnovate scalp application as a moisturiser.
- If corticosteroids are used long-term, on large areas of skin, raw or broken skin, or under airtight dressings they are absorbed into the body more. This increases the risk of local side effects such as skin thinning, and those on other parts of the body, such as a decrease in the production of natural hormones by the adrenal glands. For this reason, continuous, long-term use of this medicine should be avoided wherever possible, particularly in children and on large areas of skin. You should only cover the affected area if instructed by your doctor. If you find you still need to use this medicine after two to four weeks because your skin has not improved you should consult your doctor.
- If used in children, wherever possible this medicine should not be used for longer than five days. You should not use airtight dressings to cover the area treated.
- If you think the area of skin you are treating has become infected you should stop using this medicine and consult your doctor.
Betnovate scalp application should be used with caution in
- Children (see above).
- Psoriasis. If you have been prescribed this medicine to treat psoriasis you should have regular check-ups with your doctor. This is because although corticosteroids may be useful for psoriasis in the short-term, they can sometimes make psoriasis worse, and may cause the condition to relapse into generalised pustular psoriasis after the treatment is stopped.
Who should not use Betnovate scalp application?
- Children under one year of age.
- Skin infected with viruses (eg chickenpox, shingles), fungi (eg ringworm) or bacteria (eg impetigo).
This medicine should not be used if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
Can I use Betnovate scalp application while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. However, other medicines may be safely used in pregnancy or breastfeeding providing the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the unborn baby. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, before using any medicine.
- This medicine should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless considered essential by your doctor. If it is prescribed by your doctor it should not be used on large areas of skin, underneath dressings, or for prolonged periods of time. Consult your doctor for further information.
What are the side effects of Betnovate scalp application?
Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Just because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.
- Skin irritation at site of application, such as burning and itching.
- Allergic inflammation of the skin (contact dermatitis).
- Thinning of the skin.
- Stretch marks (striae).
- Groupings of fine blood vessels becoming prominent under the skin (telangiectasia).
- Changes in skin pigmentation.
- Excessive hair growth (hypertrichosis).
- Prolonged use of this medicine on extensive areas of skin, broken or raw skin, skin folds or underneath airtight dressings may on very rare occasions result in enough corticosteroid being absorbed to have side effects on other parts of the body, for example a decrease in the production of natural hormones by the adrenal glands, or symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome — see warning section above.

How can Betnovate scalp application affect other medicines?
This medicine is not known to affect other medicines. However, as with all medicines, it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist what medicines you are already using, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you start treatment with this medicine. Similarly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before using any new medicines while using this one, to make sure that the combination is safe.
If you are using other topical medicines on the same area of skin it is recommended that you leave several minutes between applying each product. This is to allow each product time to be absorbed and avoid them mixing on the skin.
If you apply moisturisers shortly before or after applying this medicine these can dilute the corticosteroid and potentially make it less effective. Try to apply your moisturisers at a different time of day, or at least 30 minutes before or after this medicine.
Other medicines containing the same active ingredient
Betamethasone valerate 0.1% cream and ointment are also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.
Betamethasone and clioquinol cream/ointment, Betamethasone and neomycin cream/ointment and Lotriderm cream contain betamethasone in combination with antimicrobials.
Diprosalic ointment and Diprosalic scalp application contain betamethasone in combination with salicylic acid.
As betamethasone reduces inflammation it is also found in various other medicines that are used to treat inflammatory conditions in other parts of the body. These include Betnesol eye/ear/nose drops, Vista-Methasone eye/ear/nose drops, Betnesol injection and Betamethasone soluble tablets.
