Acupressure mats may look pretty scary, but they’re perfectly safe to use. These mats are usually covered in plastic spikes, and act as a convenient, at-home replacement for in-person acupressure treatment. Set aside some time throughout the week to relax and rejuvenate with your mat after a long day. If you enjoy using your acupressure mat enough, you can start using it on a regular basis!
-
Slip into a comfortable tank top or other breezy shirt, along with a loose pair of shorts or your yoga pants. Acupressure mats are covered with small, spiky discs, so you may not want your bare skin touching the surface.[1]
- Dress as though you’re getting ready to workout or practice some yoga.
-
Find some open space in your home that’s large enough to fit your acupressure mat, like your bedroom or hallway. Check that your yoga mat is larger than your acupressure mat, as the acupressure tool will be going on top.[2]
- If you don’t have a yoga mat, feel free to use a large blanket or towel instead.
-
Unroll your acupressure mat, making sure the plastic spikes are facing up. If your mat comes with a special neck rest, place that pillow at the top.[3]
- Chances are, your acupuncture mat isn’t super long. That’s totally normal! Acupuncture mats are designed to treat and stimulate specific parts of your body.
-
Set a cooking timer or your phone for around 20 minutes, so you can monitor how long you use the acupressure mat. If you’re using the mat for the first time, you may want to set your timer to around 10 minutes.[4]
- As you get acclimated to the mat, you can set the timer to 20 minutes instead.
- You can set your timer for up to 40 minutes.
-
Gradually relax yourself onto the mat—since there are a lot of spikes, it’s going to feel a bit prickly and weird at first. Lower yourself slowly until you’re placing your full weight on the mat.[5]
- Don’t drop yourself onto the surface! While acupressure mats are designed to stimulate your skin, you don’t want to hurt or scratch yourself in the process.
-
You may be feeling really weird and uncomfortable at first as you adjust to the mat, which is totally normal! Shimmy your back, shoulders, and bottom around a bit until you find a comfortable, relaxing position. Always move slowly and gradually, so your body has time to adjust.[6]
- It may take several minutes before you feel comfortable on the mat. Don’t worry, as this is perfectly normal!
-
Close your eyes and breathe deeply, letting yourself relax completely on the surface of the mat. Try not shift and roll around—instead, just stay as still as possible. When the timer goes off, lift yourself slowly off the mat.[7]
-
Find times throughout the week to relax and rejuvenate yourself. Think about what days and times offer you the most free time, and see if you can create a regular routine for yourself. With consistent use, you may notice yourself feeling less stressed and more energized![8]
-
Bring your knees up and pull your heels in, dragging to the edge of your bottom. Keep your legs in this position each time you relax on your acupressure mat, as this helps the plastic spikes target your lower back.[9]
- You can always lay flat on the mat as well, but this is the best way to target certain parts of your back.
-
Sit on a comfortable chair and rest your bare feet on the acupressure mat or pillow. As you relax, cushion your face with your arms. Rest in this position for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on your own comfort level.[10]
- This is a great option for people who are on their feet all day.
- You can also stand on the mat, too.
-
Slowly lower yourself stomach-first onto the acupressure mat. Drape and tuck your arms beneath your head and neck, so you can be as comfortable as possible. Try to center your chest and abdomen over the spikes as you do this.[11]
- This position may also help with circulation, as well as digestion.
-
Keep your legs and back straight, centering your bottom on the plastic spikes. Arch your arms backward and place them on the yoga mat if you’d like to give yourself some extra support.[12]
- Sitting straight on your mat helps encourage good posture.
-
Lay face-down on your acupressure mat, then lift your upper body with your arms to create the cobra position. Focus on creating a gentle curve with your back, centering your thighs and groin area on the mat.[13]
- This is a great way to wind down after a tough workout. You can also use this if you’re dealing with some muscle pain.
-
Unwind with your favorite book, or relax on your mat while watching TV. If you have a pretty busy lifestyle, you can drape your mat over a chair and relax with it.[14]

While you’ve probably heard of acupressure before and perhaps have even tried different mats like yoga mats or posture mats, have you ever used the two methods combined? If not, you’re in for a real treat! Common acupressure mat benefits include relief from muscle pain, headaches, and stress, as well as deeper sleep, increased energy, and better circulation.
Acupressure mats are readily available, and so many people have opted to try this fantastic method already to help target pressure points. Acupressure mats are powerful tools, and you can enjoy all they have to offer both at home and on the go.
Today, we’ll provide a deeper understanding of what these mats are and how to use an acupressure mat, including acupressure mat positions and benefits.
Let’s see what they’re all about!
What Is an Acupressure Mat?
Acupressure mats are widely accessible and provide the same acupressure therapy benefits at home as when you use the acupressure massage services of a specialist. But what is an acupressure mat, exactly?
These special mats are made from cotton or similar materials, and normally feature small plastic spikes that stimulate targeted areas of the body, including acupressure points. They also stimulate your skin for additional relaxation and health benefits. Acupressure mats are most often used on the floor, but can also be placed on a desk chair or car seat, for example.
Our clients who use an acupressure mat often find relief from back, neck, and shoulder pain, not to mention support with sleep quality and energy levels. One of the most sought-after benefits of an acupressure mat is stress relief, and we think a mat session is perfect for after a long day at work or before heading to bed.
Since your weight is evenly distributed on the mat, there’s no way for the needles to actually puncture the skin, so you don’t have to worry about any pain or injury from this holistic method of healing and energy promotion.
However, if you are among the following groups of people or have any of these conditions, using an acupressure massage mat is not advised:
- Pregnant
- Nursing
- Have a heart condition
- Using blood pressure medication
- Have a skin infection
- Have open wounds
How to Best Use an Acupressure Mat
- First, relax and lie down on the mat. Try to evenly position your back across the mat. Always feel free to shift or move your body as needed to find a comfortable position that best suits you. Have lower back pain? No problem! Simply bend your knees or use a pillow to prop up your knees to add elevation and pinpoint muscle tension in this problem area.
- Initially, the acupressure spikes may not seem super comfortable. However, simply relax, breathe, and give your body time to adjust.
- Once you begin to feel comfortable, lie on your mat for 20–40 minutes in order to obtain ultimate results, and get up feeling calm, rejuvenated, and relaxed.
Don’t spend your time eyeing the clock. The point of this session is to relax. Set a timer in the kitchen or on your phone to track your time, and listen to meditation music if possible.
When performing acupressure on the body, it’s particularly important that your body is evenly distributed across the mat. The pinpoints are known to be unforgiving if not used correctly, so if one area of your body is taking on greater pressure, it could cause harm or bruising to the skin.
What Are the Benefits of an Acupressure Mat?
There are quite a few benefits of an acupressure mat. From helping to alleviate occasional pain to helping you find your zen, here are just some of the wonderful ways that an acupressure mat can help you daily:
- Helps with temporary neck pain relief and back pain relief
- Helps alleviate shoulder pain and occasional soreness in the shoulder blades
- Relieves stiff and sore muscles caused by overexertion
- Provides feelings of stress and tension relief after a long day
- Improves sleep quality
- Relieves nausea caused by bodily tightness and tension
- Supports healthy blood flow/blood circulation
- Supports healthy respiration
- Increases feelings of energy
Is there an acupressure mat benefit you’re looking forward to most? With so many different ways this tool provides aid and relief, it’s such a great addition to your daily routine.
While acupressure is known to provide a plethora of benefits, it should not be substituted for a needed medication or therapy prescribed by a doctor or chiropractor. Make sure to always partner with a medical professional, so they can properly treat and diagnose any of the issues you might be experiencing.
Different Needs Call for Diverse Positions
Acupressure mat positions and benefits are broad and varied, so try yours multiple ways and see what works best for you. Here are some of our favorite ideas for how to use an acupressure mat.
Back Pain
Does your back occasionally cause you some pain from your busy day-to-day movements? Here’s how to use an acupressure mat for relief.
Simply place the mat on a solid, flat surface. Sit down slowly and lie all the way down on the mat. You will begin to feel warmth creep over your upper back and entire body as the small needles start working their magic.
Experiencing back pain a little lower? Simply roll up a towel or blanket, or grab a pillow, to place under your knees for added elevation to better support that area.
If there’s unwanted pain or tension in your shoulders, you can take that same towel or blanket and place it under the upper part of your back to pinpoint a different area.
Give it about 20 minutes, and you’ll really start to feel some relief!
Neck Pain
A lot of times with neck pain, people will reach for a pillow rather than a mat for extra pain relief. However, an acupressure mat can provide amazing benefits you’ll never get with just a pillow.
If you choose to use an acupressure pillow, first lie down on a flat surface or find a tall chair or couch to sit on. Place your neck on the pillow and then adjust as you feel comfortable. You can use the pillow for about 20 minutes or until you feel a reduction in pain or discomfort.
If you use an acupressure mat, lower your body down slowly and tuck a rolled blanket or towel under your head. You can move it as necessary and keep pressure on it for the same amount of time as the pillow. For maximum rejuvenation, you can do this for up to 40 minutes. Remember, do what makes you feel comfortable.
Feelings of Restlessness or Stress
The mat not only relaxes the body – it also brings comfort and peace to your mind. You can use the mat in a similar way for back pain. Make sure to lie in a comfortable position that evenly distributes your weight for optimal results.
For added comfort, you can use the mat on both your bed and couch since they will be a little softer than the floor.
Breathe deeply and relax. You can close your eyes to bring focus to your breathing. It also helps to play music and take part in a guided meditation. Twenty-five to 40 minutes is the ideal amount of time to reap all the healing benefits of the acupressure mat.
Energy Boost
For an energy boost, do the opposite of the above in terms of time usage. The less time spent on the mat, the more rejuvenated (rather than relaxed) you’ll feel in the long run.
Lie on your mat where you feel comfortable, and set a timer for no more than 20 to 25 minutes. Try to keep your mat on the floor instead of your bed, especially if you’re feeling sleepy. The moment you get up, you’ll feel that instant rejuvenation you’ve been craving.
Best of all? It’s all-natural energy! Now, there’s no need to go and grab a coffee or shot of espresso! Try this method during your midday slump and experience the energy-boosting difference!
Deeper Sleep
Need better sleep? The benefits of an acupressure mat may help. Be sure to stay on the mat for longer than 20 minutes. If more time is needed, stay on the mat until it starts to truly induce those desired sleepy feelings.
Just make sure the mat is eventually removed and you don’t sleep on it all night. Too much of a good thing has a habit of bringing harm. Plus, if you move in the middle of the night and put too much pressure on one area, it could cause unnecessary bruising or puncturing of the skin.
Make this a relaxing part of your nighttime routine to help improve your sleep through the night.
Feet and Reflexology
Work on your feet all day? Then this method is definitely for you! These mats are meant to help alleviate pain in your feet, especially if you’ve been wearing uncomfortable shoes or walking all day.
Feel free to use the mat or pillow, too! Either will work. When standing on the mat, it might even feel similar to having a foot massage. And who doesn’t love a good foot massage?
Similar Methods are Available
If you truly feel an acupressure mat is not for you, no worries! There are plenty of other ways to enjoy relief comparable to the benefits of an acupressure mat.
These are the four other holistic methods that can be utilized similarly and drive closely related results:
- Trigger point massage
- Acupuncturist services
- Cupping
- Gua sha
Our Final Thoughts
So, what’s the consensus? Is an acupressure mat a good fit for you?
With the ease of use of this holistic tool and all its health benefits, there are plenty of exciting reasons why you could add some “mat time” into your busy schedule.
It’s a holistic healing method that aids in your journey toward a healthier lifestyle. Plus, there are little to no side effects to affect your daily routine in a negative way. So, give it a try!

How to Use an Acupressure Mat the Right Way
Acupressure has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine. TCM is regarded by western doctors as a sort of supplemental or alternative medicine. In acupressure, pressure points near the body’s meridians, or energy channels, are stimulated, just as they are in acupuncture, to allow chi, or energy, to flow freely.
In this article, we will look at the benefits of an acupressure mat, acupressure mat positions and benefits, and show you how they can improve your health
What Is an Acupressure Mat?
An acupressure mat is a piece of rubber or plastic that is covered with hundreds of plastic nubs. These little bulges apply pressure to the areas of the body that are in direct contact with the surface, stimulating the healing effects of an acupressure massage.
So, how do acupressure mats work? Acupuncture mats might take a bit of getting used to. They are sharp and can cause some discomfort at first until they begin to warm up the body; then, they feel pleasant. By following the steps outlined below, you’ll be well on your way to incorporating an acupressure mat into your daily routine.
-
Select the Surface
For beginners, a mat laid out on a bed or sofa is often used as a training ground, although this is not always the case. Intermediate and advanced users often place their mats directly on the floor.
-
Sit Down on the Mat
You can also sit on or against the mat in a chair, making sure that your buttocks and lower back are continually in close contact with its surface.
-
Start Out with a Layer Between Yourself and the Mat
Wearing a light shirt or laying a thin fabric over the spikes can be another option. Users report that they obtain the best results when the mat is in contact with bare skin. However, most people don’t feel the need to go shirtless right away.
-
Lie Down Slowly
As you lie down on the mat, make sure your weight is spread equally across its surface.
-
Reposition Yourself Carefully
In order to avoid skin punctures or scratches while on the mat, it’s vital to keep your movements to a bare minimum.
-
Be Consistent
It takes some time to get used to using mats, but most people say they work well when used correctly. As long as you’re patient, this product will continue to reap benefits.
Acupressure Mat Benefits and Side Effects
What does an acupressure mat do? The below are some of the benefits of use:
- The effects of tension and fear are reduced.
- Muscle tension is reduced as a result of increased blood flow, which also improves oxygenation levels. As a result of its endorphin-inducing properties, it can help to improve mood and alleviate depression
- Reduces insomnia.
- Standing on the mat with both feet evenly spaced is said to relieve headaches.
- Relief for neck ache and backache, along with sciatica, back, and leg pain
But there are also times when you shouldn’t be using a mat like this. Those at risk of acupressure mat side effects are listed below:
- Patients with thin skin, diabetes, or poor circulation should not use an acupressure mat
- Pregnant women are advised not to use acupressure mats.
- Don’t use an acupressure mat if you’re pregnant.
- Only a medical professional should perform acupressure during labor—but only if you need it.
- No one under the age of three years old should utilize an acupressure mat.
- Make sure you consult with your doctor before using one if you have high or low blood pressure.
- Using acupressure mats as a substitute for medical care or prescribed medicine is not recommended.
Best Practices
An acupressure mat is good at doing what it does. That said, you can maximize benefits by doing the following:
Avoid Using Them on Bare Skin at First
Acupressure mats have barbs and needles that might cause discomfort at first. When using them initially, keep a layer of protection between the mat and your skin to avoid irritation.
Pay Attention to Your Breathing
Correct breathing is of the utmost importance. You need to be able to relax, so inhale and exhale deeply.
Start Slowly
It’s a new experience for you, so you should start slowly. Don’t overexpose yourself to it because it might affect you negatively.
Don’t Use It for Too Long
Building off the last point, you need to find a balance that works for you. We would recommend something between 20 and 40 minutes.
Four Techniques for Using an Acupressure Mat for Different Needs
As with most tools, there are many different things you can achieve with them, depending on how you choose to use them. In this section, we’ll look at some of these uses.
For Back Pain
To begin, flatten the mat on a level surface. Roll your back down to the mat’s base, then sit on it. As a result of intense acupressure applied to the spikes, blood flow is increased, and recovery is expedited.
If you suffer from lower back pain, throw a cloth under the mat to create a curve that will hug your spine. Using a pillow or folded blanket, sit down on the mat and press your lower back into it.
For Neck Pain
Acupuncture pillows are frequently used to alleviate discomfort in people with persistent neck pain. You can choose from a variety of shapes and patterns depending on what you require. Using a few props, even if all you have is a mat, you can get some relief from neck pain.
To get the most out of an acupressure mat, just roll a towel and place it beneath the uppermost end. Using the towel as a «bump,» slowly lower your back until your neck is resting there. Use it for 20 minutes to feel energized and for up to 40 minutes to rest your body.
For Leg Pain
There are a variety of options for using mats and pillows. It’s reported that standing directly on the mat has an invigorating impact on some people. Others apply pressure to different parts of the body in the same way that you would get with a massage.
For Mood & Focus
Lying on an acupressure mat can help you relax your body and mind. Many people feel that it helps alleviate stress and anxiety. You should use the mat in the same way you would for back pain. You may want to do this on a soft surface like a bed or couch rather than on the floor.
Once you’ve gotten comfy on the mat, take a deep breath and let go. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing while you relax. Listen to a guided meditation or chant a mantra. To completely de-stress your body and mind, spend at least 25 minutes and as long as 40 minutes on the mat.
Are Acupressure Mats Safe?
They are very safe. All you have to do is check you don’t have any of the conditions that would prevent use, and you will be fine. These conditions and disorders include:
- Pregnancy
- Nursing
- Having a heart condition
- Using blood pressure medication
- Having a skin infection
- Having open wounds

So you’ve bought your first acupressure mat, or maybe you haven’t just yet, and now you’re wondering what to do with it and whether it will actually work?!
You’ll be reassured to know that there are lots of different ways it can be used, offering various health advantages.
We’ve teamed up with Aku, the team behind (in our opinion), the world’s best acupressure tool — the Aku Mat.
Their professional insight, together with our experience and rigorous testing, has enabled us to summarize 10 ways to use an acupressure mat:
1. For Back Pain
Back pain affects 80% of adults at some point in their lifetime, so if you’re struggling with the condition then you’re not alone.
There are a number of tools and remedies to help manage your condition, including acupressure.
It’s one of the most popular reasons to step on the spiky surface, and it’s no surprise when compelling research data and anecdotal evidence show that acupressure mats work for back pain.
Once you’ve invested in your mat then you might be wondering how to use it to start relieving your discomfort.
Take a look below at a step by step guide from Aku on how to use an acupressure mat for back pain:
-
You can place your mat on any surface — but we recommend a bed or workout mat. Softer surfaces allow your unique body shape to naturally form to the Aku Mat.
-
Sit down at the base of the mat and slowly roll your back down until you are lying on the mat. Make sure to have your bodyweight evenly distributed across the spikes.
-
Once you’re in the desired position it’s all about breathing. Focus on slow, deep breaths — only then will your body and mind begin to relax.
-
Several important acupressure points are located on the back, particularly the lumbar region. Applying consistent pressure to these areas can relieve lower back pain and sciatica.
-
Aku recommends staying in this position for a duration of 10 minutes.
2. For Neck Pain
Neck pain is another growing health issue across the world, exacerbated by smartphone use.
In fact, research has shown that smartphone overuse in office workers increases the chance of neck pain by six times.
That’s because your neck is a notoriously tight area where stress and tension can build up.
To treat your neck you can simply roll up your mat to create a pillow and nestle the metal spikes into your neck.
10 minutes is the recommended duration of your treatment, giving the spikes time to soothe your tired or injured muscles.
Acupressure is proven to be effective for neck pain, and has many associated benefits that Aku summarize below:
Neck acupressure points are deeply relaxing and can be triggered to promote thyroid health, which lessens anxiety and stress.
All the research points in the same direction — acupressure has a positive impact on foot pain.
Aku are keen to point out that’s because our feet are covered in acupressure points and nerve centers that are a perfect target for the Aku Mat.
Follow the how-to guide below to start treating your foot pain:
- Roll out your mat. Start with socks on, and slowly work your way up to bare feet.
- Slowly step onto the mat and breathe deeply as your entire bodyweight presses into the metal spikes.
- The second you step on the spikes you’ll feel energy rush up the legs. This is the most intense method of the treatment.
- One minute durations are recommended initially until you get used to the treatment.
Soft tissue injuries can result in scar tissue formation, increased tension and pain. Acupressure is effectively used to decrease tension and pain by reducing any scar tissue.
The acupressure technique applies deep pressure onto an area of injury and temporarily restricts the blood flow. On release fresh blood circulation is stimulated allowing nutrients and oxygen to be delivered and the tissue repair process to begin.
The deep pressure applied to scar tissue breaks down fibrous tissue and promotes tissue fibre realignment.
There are findings to suggest that even a short time on your acupressure mat can aid recovery.
In fact, just three minutes of regular treatment has been shown to lessen the pain scores of injured athletes.
Aku suggest starting with a thin t-shirt or socks on while your body adjusts to the initial intensity.
However for the full intensity you should work up to bare skin.
Use your tool in bed, on the floor, or on a couch, whichever acupressure mat position feels the most comfortable.
6. To Improve Mobility — Releasing Knots and Trigger Points
Aku remark that relaxing tense muscles and improving mobility is one of the top reasons to invest in the Aku Mat.
Of course if you’re struggling with knots in your back, you can follow the guidance above.
However if it’s knots in your legs, they have a more unexpected suggestion!
They recommend sitting on the Aku Mat for 5-10 minutes with your legs over the surface area of the mat.
For more localized areas of tension they propose another of their spiky tools — the Aku Ball.
We also reviewed this product in detail and found it to be highly versatile for pain relief.
Covered in 656 metal spikes it’s perfect for improving mobility in your neck or releasing a trigger point elsewhere on your body that might be hard to reach by lying down on the mat.
7. To Boost Your Circulation
Looking for ways to give your circulation a boost? Then the Aku Mat could be a good investment.
There is evidence to demonstrate that the treatment can significantly increase blood flow to the area being treated.
In the small-scale study, patients with Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Diseases underwent regular three minute sessions with positive outcomes.
Aku feel that incorporating acupressure into your daily routine is the way to go!
There is no frequency limit as such, just regular 10-15 minute sessions should help you experience the full acupressure effect.
8. To Produce Endorphins
Here at The Good Body we were lucky enough to conduct a Q&A with the CEO of AkuSpike, Paul de Jersey.
He explained that the tiny metal spikes on the Aku Mat stimulate active nerve centers in the body to increase local blood flow and lymph circulation.
This reflective action triggers the release of endorphins, the feel-good neurotransmitters and an essential part of the body’s natural healing process.
When speaking about the production of endorphins in particular, he offered this clear and insightful guidance for use:
- To maximize benefit and limit initial discomfort, we recommend standing or laying on the Aku Mat for up to 10 minutes a day.
- Begin with a light t-shirt or socks, and graduate to skin on metal contact as your body adapts to the process.
- After a few minutes laying or standing on the Aku Mat, endorphins begin to flow throughout the body enabling the user to enter into a state of euphoric pleasure and total relaxation.
- You will feel a rush of warmth to the targeted area, followed by a release of tension as muscle aches and pains begin to melt away.
9. To Treat Anxiety
More than 30 different pieces of research have proven that acupressure therapy has an immediate and positive impact on the symptoms of anxiety.
We’ve found through testing the Aku Mat, that the best way to find relief is by making it part of your self-care routine and setting a mood.
Consider lighting a candle, misting some anxiety-relieving essential oils into the air, or listening to binaural beats. Making it part of your yoga or meditation practice can also be powerful.
Don’t underestimate the power of your breathing while using the tool either.
According to AkuSpike, many people tend to hold their breath as a reflex mechanism when stepping onto the spiky surface.
Ashley Neese, author of the book “How to Breath” and well-known wellbeing influencer, shared some comprehensive breathing exercises with the Aku team.
Try following the ‘4 in, 4 out’ technique below:
- Find a target area then lay on the mat
- Set an intention for recovery (there are many positive affirmations that can inspire you)
- Set a timer for 3 minutes
- Close your eyes
- Place one hand on your heart and the other on your diaphragm
- Begin counting to 4 slowly on the inhale
- Slowly exhale for 4
- Repeat this until the timer rings
- Move the mat to another target area and repeat
The thinking behind this technique is that it helps your body enter a parasympathetic state, slowing your heart rate and allowing you to feel calmer.
Our products are meticulously designed with high-grade metal spikes that naturally stimulate energy flow throughout the body.
We harness ancient techniques with new age technology to create the most effective acupressure experience available.
Some generic acupressure mats are comprised of cheap and sometimes harmful plastics.
There are dozens of plastic mat derivatives available, but only one mat that emulates the authentic acupressure experience.
As with boosting your circulation, it’s a case of making the treatment a part of your everyday routine.
Regular practice will allow you to achieve the full range of benefits that acupressure can offer!
We wrote a detailed review of the Aku Mat after months of testing.
By looking closely at each feature, our team were able to deliver an insightful look at the product.
